My sloped areas took in the water with little movement of water. When I was done I turned the sprinklers on for 10 minutes a zone to help get it in. The irrigation was done at 9pm. Weeks later and eight days after receiving a 3" rainfall, I used a moisture meter and found that not only was the soil soft enough for the probe to easily insert 5-6 inches, but the soil was moist all the way down - something I'd had a hard time achieving due to compacted, hydrophobic soil and run-off. So Soil Loosener gets 5 stars for sure. I opted for the Root Hume and Micronutrient Booster to improve the over-all health of the soil and give my new grass seed the best growing conditions possible. I don't have a way of determining how much these products changed the condition of the soil, except to say that my new grass is dense, emerald green and gorgeous. Very recent studies have shown that higher doses of nitrogen are good in September and even October, but as the temperature drops, the need for nitrogen decreases while the need for phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) increase. At a minimum this product serves as a Surface Tension Breaker (a Surfactant). Hair Shampoos often use SLS (Sodium Laurel Sulfate) or SLES (Sodium Laureth Sulfate) or even ALS as a you-guessed-it a “surfactant” to break surface tension and allow working shampoo through hair easier and faster. Baby Shampoo is often recommended for lawns because most of them (not all!) don’t have anti-bacterial agents as some adult products might. You don’t want anti-bacterial agents applied to your lawn/You want to let the organisms live! SLS could be mixed at a ratio of 1oz per 1.5 gal of water or 2.5oz per 4Gal backpack sprayer. For lawns or potted plants apply in a thin, even spray. My yard is 1.5 acres so I need a lot of solution per Lawn treatment. Likely approx. 1x 32oz bottle of SLS. Ounce for ounce, using a surfactant is far < $ for 1 gallon bottle/128oz than a single 32oz bottle of ALS, SLES, or SLS. PS Be careful using ALS straight up can be 🔥 **Q: What is the mix per gallon of water?** A: For lawns use 1 oz per 1000 ft square. 1 32 oz bottle will cover 32,000 ft square. The water per thousand is not so measured as the actual product to be applied. Meaning if you apply a little more water or less water per 1000 ft 2 it will not effect the outcome as long as your use 1 oz per 1000 ft 2. Remember you need to water in the first few inches of the soil and each time you irrigate or when water is applied you will improve soil structure and this will work better. **Q: How many sq ft does one unit cover?** A: 1 oz. of product per 1000 sq. ft of lawn. My grass responds so much better to watering as evidenced by the blades appearing greener after watering. My soil was so compacted, I just don’t think the water was getting very far. I would water for 20-30 minutes and my moisture reader would show dry to normal, or in some areas it would be wet, but it didn’t retain. I also wasn’t noticing a big impact on my grass from watering. Here’s the downside…my water bill will probably go up now because I’m officially addicted to watering my grass now that I clearly can see the results of becoming more and more green. 😂😂 So why 4 stars instead of 5? I can tell it significantly helped aerate my soil with just one application. I also like that I can get two full applications for my yard out of one bottle. It works, no complaints about the product. I would use it again. However, it does not beat Jonathan Green’s Love Your Soil. The year I used that for the first time, I was shocked how much it softened and loosened up my soil.
