What does the self-cleaning mean?

Self-cleaning: Through a special loop, the hose, sprayer parts and spray wand can be cleaned by external clean water without contact with the chemicals in the water tank. It is especially suitable when you only spray half of the chemicals and plan to rest. You can keep the chemicals in the water tank, use self-cleaning to clean it up, and continue to use chemicals next time!

Does the pump run continuously when switched on, or only when spraying?

Only when spraying. It shuts off when you release the trigger. If the tank runs empty, it will constantly run though so make sure to turn it off once the tank is empty.

Can sprayer be used to water plants without damaging them?

This has an adjustable spray volume. It should work fine for watering plants.

Where can u just buy extra battery for sprayer

You can order it from the company that makes it, but I can tell you the battery last a very long time. It can be used for several days for 3-5 hrs and want need to be charged.
