I don't love sharpening my plane irons on them, but I do. The stone is not wide enough to work the plane irons straight on, so I have to skew my blade to hone wider plane irons. The diamond stone could be considered "expensive" so it kind of stink to have to buy it, but if you are using hand tools, having a way to sharpen your tools should be placed as a higher priority than the tool itself. A dull blade is just plane not safe to use, and it doesn't work the way it should, which will make you stop working with hand tools all together. Other than the width this is a fantastic diamond plate, it will need to be broke in like any diamond plate. Very fast metal removal on the 300 grit and just what you would expect on the 1000 grit.
