Rust-Oleum 247596 Magnetic Primer, 30 oz, Black

I tried this product despite what I felt mostly negative reviews. The positive reviews basically have all had the same response. FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS. 1. On the can it states 3 thin c,,oats are better than 2 thick coats. It also states to mix for at least 10 minutes. It should be a dark gray as oppoee to the black. That tells me it is similar to an epoxy base but the "metal" must be warmed up. Lastly it states 1 can can cover 16 sq ft for three coats. a.) Now a quart of paint should cover 100 sq ft. This covers about 48 sq ft if you lay the paint on as the manufacturer states. So if you are painting 100-120 sq ft in a single can you need to put on at least three cans before it is effective. I placed 5 coats on thus far and a coverage area of 260 sq ft. Based on the logic 1 can covers 3 coats of 16 sq ft or 48 sq ft total it should take me 16.25 cans. I have current put on about 11.5 with two coats to go. Wait at least 12-18 hours before trying the magnets. Currently the magnets hold great. I am putting on two more coats based on what the manufacture states. It is not easy and not cheap. If you don't have the patience don't mess with it. #1 It takes about a hour to cover 100sq ft with a 6 inch foam roller. #2 I stirred the paint with a paint whisk and drill for those ten minutes and poured small amounts at a time into the tray. Each time I went back for more paint I stirred for 5 minutes. #3 IF it does not work you probably are not mixing it enough or don't have enough paint on. FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS. Oh yeah if you are hanging up magnets on walls that are not straight it won't work. My walls are plaster and when placing letter magnets on I see curves on the plaster. MAGNETD won't stick to this but that is not then products fault, it needs to be able to have surface contact to hold. #4 It is paint. I have read the reviews it smells, it is hard to wash off. REALLY??? It is paint. If it had no smell or does not stick to your skin I would think something is wrong. Open windows and grab GOJO orange with wet hands and work the paint out. A shower afterwards will get the rest out.

For those of you that jump into this project without doing your homework...you will be dissapointed. I read many reviews before starting my magnetic chalboard project therefore my magnetic board turned out awesome. 1. You must be patient and organized. This paint splatters so be sure to tape off your walls and use a drop cloth. 2. You need to have the can shaken professionally at a paint store. In between coats I would also close the can and store it upside down. 3. If you do not want paint on your hands then you should always wear gloves when you paint. This does not wash off easlily so I just wore a thin pair of disposable gloves. I went through about 2 packs on this project. I also kept a few dry towels and a few damp towels handy to make sure that my handle on my roller stayed clean and to wipe up any splatter as it occured. 4. Painting in general stinks. I have seen reviews that bash this product because it smells bad. Make sure you ventilate your room. It was cool outside so I opened my windows and brought in a fan. The smell of fresh paint will always linger for a few days. The smell from this went away within a week. 5. When you apply this paint make sure that you go slow to avoid large amounts of splatter. If you have ever used Ralph Lauren Suede paint and have used the V-technique ( I made that term up because you push your roller up and down in a v-pattern) I would reccomend doing so. I put 8 coats of this magnetic primer on my walls and it works wonderfully. 6. Most custom paint jobs require more time and attention to detail. This is the case for this product. As always make sure you keep clean work area. 7. I would reccomed this product to anyone who has some experience with paint and is willing to follow some directions.I would not reccomend this as a first time painting project. I have also found that most general contractors are great at applying a single layer of paint on the wall but are generally not skilled with custom painting techniques that require mixing paints/colors and or textures. IF you are going to hire someone to do these types of jobs then you should ask to look at their portfolio first.

This arrived very clumpy and it seemed like all the magnetic particles were completely separated from the paint. I tried to mix this with a drill paint mixer and it never smoothed out. I then googled “rustoleum magnetic paint lumpy” and a blog by a designer came up saying that this paint doesn’t even work and will not hold a piece of paper with any type of magnet, so I threw the whole thing in the trash.

You must be patient when using this product. I read lots of reviews, tips, and tutorials before attempting my project. I was pleased with the overall results and felt I was able to achieve what I wanted. I used it to create a magnetic chalkboard wall in my kids playroom. You will need to stir the paint with a paint stick for at least 10 mins before beginning. The paint starts out thick and clumpy, but if you take your time working the mixture together a little at at time, it will even out into a smooth texture. The paint is thicker than normal paint. When applying it to the wall, I used a 6in foam roller and applied a little at a time. I poured a small amount in my tray to work with. Before refilling my tray, I stirred the paint in the can each time. The in between stirring was not as difficult as the initial stirring. I bought 5 cans to use based on the product description for the amount I needed to cover my surface area. I only ended up using 2 1/2 cans. This was after applying 5 coats of paint. I also skipped sanding my wall since it did not have a thick texture. I found that my kids magnets are able to adhere to the wall well even after two coats of chalkboard paint on top. I don’t think there is a strong enough pull to hold heavy magnets or heavy artwork. However, it works just fine for their lighter magnets and drawings. The major negative is the smell! It is super strong! I opened all my upstairs windows, turned on the bathroom vents and lit candles for the days to get rid of the smell! Also the price. I bought 5 cans, so I paid a lot to do this wall. And that’s not counting the chalkboard paint and other supplies. Maybe I’m just being cheap, but I wish it hadn’t been so expensive. Overall, I am satisfied with how the project turned out! I felt the paint was easier to work with than I had anticipated. The photos show the wall after the first layer, after the third layer, and after all five layers with two layers of chalkboard paint and magnets applied holding artwork! I hope this helps!

This was a pain! It was sticky, and really hard to wash out of my brushes. I ended buying sponge brushes and throwing everything I used with it away. The lady at home depot mixed it twice, and said it was the "nastiest paint" she's ever mixed. Do take it to Lowe's or home depot. Don't try to hand mix it! Unless you're popeye. On the way to home depot I spilled some of the "watery stuff" on my shirt. It came out of the shirt but stained my bra underneath...maybe I should try to stick a magnet to my bra? It's stinky. I opened all three Windows and ran a fan but should've used a mask, I now have a sore throat tonight, which can happen from painting accoriding to google. It's very weirdly drippy, and finicky. you have to play with it when you apply, the edges like to come out rough. Comes on black but is easy to cover up with the lightest paint, when you make a mistake! My nails are now black. All other paint washes off well, but not this junk. Oil helped remove a lot of it, soap did nothing. I recommend gloves when ever using this. All in all, my extra strength magnets stick, they slide a bit, but they do stick when I gently put them on there. I'm going to glue the magnets on the back of some toy cars for my baby room. It does work with magnets. I think because I mixed mine with at home depot? And I guess I used "multiple coats" I just laid it on really thick. It says it's a primer, but I wouldn't recommend using another color on top, the magnetic properties aren't strong. My carpet has the nasty stuff on it in a corner. Need to figure out how to get it out...anywho, it works! Just is the biggest PAIN. If you like a 12 hour project, use this primer! Be forewarned it ruins everything while wet because it's sticky and disgusting, and it smells like butt. My wall looks cute...

I used this on a drawer thanks I had for the kids. It does smell really badly so make sure you have proper ventilation or use outside. It is sluggy I mixed it very well for the 10 minutes that’s suggested. Once I finished mixing I used a fork roller to paint with. The roller kept getting heavy and falling off.. that was a bit annoying. They my son knocked over the paint and stepped in it and tracked it all over my kitchen, bathroom and his bedroom carpet! 🤦🏻‍♀️ That was hard to clean up but I used some WD 40 and it came up off the floor and off him. Haven’t gotten it out of the carpet yet.. Anyway.. once painted I sanded it down.. magnetic stuck nicely. I used chalkboard paint over it and still sticks nicely. It’s just for kids so idk if the magnetic would hold up papers like the other comments suggest it doesn’t. Once the chalkboard paint is done curing I’m sure the kids will love this!

I used two cans of this to cover about one 4'x6' sheet's worth of plywood with six coats total (and then chalkboard paint). We have a built-in fridge with panels that looked like cabinets (circa 1995), and I wanted to swap it out with a magnetic chalkboard front. The results are great. I have the small neodymium magnets, and then flat flexible picture holder magnets (the kind where the entire back is a flat magnet, and you can slide a picture into the clear plastic front). Both stick really well. A couple tips: - Know that it is going to take 5+ coats for the primer to be effective. It's not bad if you know this going in, and you can put on a new coat every 30-45 minutes, especially if you are painting outside. - It helped a lot to pour out the entire can into the rolling pan, and then breaking up the clumps and stirring it until it was well mixed. - Get a pack of latex or nitrile gloves and just wear those while you are painting/mixing.

I ordered this product to make my son a whiteboard that would allow him to stick magnets to it. I painted on the first few coats just fine, and kept testing the dry areas with a small magnet, even after 4 coats the magnet still would not stick very well. I finished the entire product that gave me about 6 coats and the magnet still does not stick very well. I really needed another can just to make more coats as I was covering it with a whiteboard paint, but I just left it. The project is done and it is a little disappointing but I guess it was cheaper than buying one from a store.

Well. Prepare for at list 3 or 4 very thin coat for any results. Not working very well tbh. Make sure that is missed super well before use

The container must have been in storage for months as when it made it to me it was almost solid and it required a lot of effort to get it to any fluid condition to be able to apply it

Very good product for creating a magnetic wall. But I wish it could be a little cheaper

We had to do three coats before the magneteism took effect, and many of the magnets still slide off. Not worth 53$.
