I used it to shave down an eight foot plank of macassar ebony. Worked beautifully. Lovely traditional draw knife.

I use this knife to remove bark from Douglas fir trees for log cabin construction. These trees have thick and heavy bark. The knife works very well for the task, and if it works for me chances are that it will be good enough for whatever you might need it to do. I read a bunch of critical reviews of this knife, and I can say that I disagree. The knife arrived sharp, which truly isn't and shouldn't be a point of complaint anyway considering that yes, you will need to sharpen this tool periodically. Personally I would question any review that talks about the sharpness of a knife as a complaint. Any wood working tool will need sharpened during use and it's strange to imply otherwise. The handles are NOT plastic. They are high quality wood with a good coating of paint. Very sturdy. I saw a review saying that their tool rusted. This is likewise a bizarre complaint. Trees are full of water, and if you don't maintain your tools you can expect them to degrade. Simply clean and oil your knife after use, as you would with any woodworking equipment. All in all I would completely recommend this draw knife to anyone who needs a tool of this type. Spend the extra money and avoid the cheaper knives, you won't regret it.

This is a nice sturdy forged drawknife with a slight convex edge in two directions. The cutting edge is slightly convex (further out in the middle) and the blade is slightly convex (can rock on the back slightly when on a flat surface. This configuration suits me fine and the knife works very well for me. Mine has handles that screw onto the forged blade rather than the tangs that bend off the blade and go through the handles. So that's a miss because what I received was not what was pictured. However I think it might actually suit me better because it makes the blade easier to sharpen by making the handles easy to remove and replace. Handles being in the way are a lot of what makes these challenging to sharpen. The handles are aligned with the blade (their axis is parallel to blade back). Again, this works fine for me because it's a good compromise when using the knife both bevel up and bevel down as I do. The forging is excellent, Teutonic manufacturing ethics are clearly apparent. The back cleaned up nicely on a 1000 grit stone because the grinding marks were fine. Polished up on a 6000 grit waterstone the edge takes a mirror finish and holds an extremely sharp edge much better than I would have expected. A polished edge leaves a very smooth, glistening surface on dry wood and is very satisfactory indeed. It cuts green wood like butter and is fully satisfactory on that count as well. Comes with a plastic slip-on edge guard that's worth keeping track of until you can sort out a sheath of some sort. Otherwise it's going to be dangerous to keep in a drawer or bag, risking cuts to yourself and other items as well as risking edge damage. Overall, excellent and an excellent value at the $43 I paid for it, I would definitely do it again and recommend. Definitely a much better option than the somewhat less expensive Chinese versions you see available next to it here on Amazon for maybe 3/4 the price. Those are just disappointment waiting to happen.
