## Description

Product description Game Cartridge Only. Review Doom set the standard for first-person shooters when it hit PCs in 1993. Since then, we've seen versions for every system that could handle it, from Sony's PlayStation to Sega's ill-conceived 32X add-on, with varying results. While most would argue that Doom is finally dead, Midway is attempting to keep the series alive with its latest release, Doom 64 for the N64. While it's probably the best version to date, it pales in comparison to id Software's follow-up, Quake, which currently looms on the console horizon. Doom 64 picks up where all the other Doom games left off. After tearing through space, hell, and wherever else your Space Marine was sent, you thought that the threat of the demons was finally past. Of course, one survived, and it is currently reanimating all of the fallen monsters in a last-ditch attempt to revitalize their evil mission. Your task is to finally rid the universe of all the crazy hellions - from the dead guy with the pistol to the rocket-spewing Cyberdemon. Of all the changes made for the N64 version, the upgraded graphics are perhaps the most striking. There are new images and texture maps for every weapon, monster, and wall. Every character looks crisp and maintains his sharpness at close range - finally removing the pixelation that previous versions have suffered from. True lightsourcing has also been added, so colored lights and shadows permeate the game's 30-plus levels. The sound has also been tweaked and now boasts a few new death screams and a hauntingly ambient soundtrack. Thrown in (seemingly) as an afterthought is a new weapon, the laser, which proves to be next to useless and is nowhere near as cool as it's made out to be. The basic rules have been adjusted as well. Some changes are major - the switch system is no longer a "flip once" process - some are now used for multiple openings and must be returned to more than once. Several items teleport in now, making it much harder to find keys and other power-ups integral to completing the game. The minor changes, while not noticeable to everyone, will surely bother hard-core Doom fans. For instance, now that the engine is true 3-D, rooms can exist on top of each other - gone are the gratuitous staircases and ramps that dominated the original. It's almost as if the design team set out to make people re-think what Doom was capable of doing. While no one could argue that this is an unworthy ambition, if the team was prepared to make minor, annoying changes to the game, then why couldn't they throw in completely new features like jumping or the ability to look up and down. Better yet - why not just make an entirely new game instead? Play control remains the same in Doom 64 but seems somewhat restrictive when compared to that of the PC version. The analog stick enables you to force your Marine along at several different speeds - but it never feels quite right. In fact, this sense of being 'wrong' permeates the entire title. On paper, Doom 64 sounds better than the original could ever hope to be, but the end result feels more like a bastardization of the original. Uninitiated or casual Doom players may get a kick out of Doom 64 - the graphics are fairly impressive and the game still has a spooky atmosphere. But anyone who has downloaded custom WADs for the PC with new levels, graphics, and sounds has already seen greater things from the world of Doom. Sigh... yet another mediocre N64 game. --Jeff Gerstmann --Copyright ©1999 GameSpot Inc. All rights reserved. Doom 64

*by S***E on Reviewed in the United States on January 10, 2013*

Doom 64 is what you would probably expect when looking at it, Satanic imagery (half of the game takes place in Hell, how could you not expect some type of reference to it), dark, gloomy atmosphere, eerie sounding music and plenty of demons.Well, if you expected any of this, you expected right. Doom 64 is probably the darkest game I have ever played. From my view/experience, the sound can definitely start to take its toll on you. At first you may be thinking, ''Oh, the music in this isn't so bad'', but once you progress further, into certain areas, the music may begin to start hitting you, along with its perfectly-fitted atmosphere. The monsters, albeit not every single one from the previous Doom games, are back to try to kill you. There are a couple of new monsters, however. The nightmare imp, for example, is like an 'enhanced' version of the average imp you would see. The difference? They're harder to see, their projectiles they shoot at you are faster and they can catch you off guard easily, but so could every other demon. There is a new demon you see only once..but I'll let you play the game and let you find out on your own.Anyways, the story, if you don't already know it. You're the same marine ('Doomguy' as some may call him) from the previous games, if you couldn't guess that. You thought you killed the demons for good, but there was one that slipped past the security areas and had resurrected all of the carcasses of the dead demons. You, having found this out, go back to kill all of the demons and then you continually progress towards the source of where the demons are coming from to destroy it. As I've said before, half of this game takes place in Hell. The other is within the halls of Phobos and Deimos. As soon as you're done killing the demons from there, you go to Hell. You kill all of the demons in Hell, then you make it to the final level. The level whose name, which was supposed to originally be the name of the game itself (changed to correlate with the system it was on; 64) is 'The Absolution'. In this level, you basically fight through every monster you've fought before, unless you find three artifacts, which let you prevent this and get on with the final boss. Also, you basically need these artifacts to kill the final demon anyways, otherwise you will stay up for many hours trying to kill it without them.Overall, this game is extremely fun. Very dark, spooky, evil and even humorous at times (if you die, don't press any buttons to see some very nice messages at the top left screen), which is what it was aiming for. I highly recommend this game if you're a Doom fan, fan of horror games or just looking for something new to put in your Nintendo 64.Pros to Doom 64:-Very detailed surroundings-Extremely spooky, mood-setting atmosphere-Demons that can help add on to the ''scare factor'' of the atmosphere-Really good variety of weapons (Weapons from the bloody chainsaw to the BFG9000, including a new weapon exclusive to the game)-Good mood-setting music to go along with the atmosphere-The roars and grunts of the monsters, along with them popping out of nowhere, can easily scare somebody and make them pause the game. Especially in little kids.Cons to Doom 64-The puzzles can sometimes probably make you wander around shooting walls and random things trying to figure out what to do. It's very annoying at times, but it definitely doesn't ruin this game by any means.(Review written entirely from my opinion and view/experience of the game)

    DOOM at it's best!!

*by B***Y on Reviewed in the United States on August 24, 2007*

If you like scif/horror first person action games you can't go wrong here. Like in previous versions of this game, there are no objectives, you just blast your way through level after level of monster infested spaceports and labs. The enemies are still 2-Dimensional, but they have been revamped and look new and different. The weapons have also been improved. The framerate is very smooth and the graphics are clear and stylistic, with ambient lighting. There are 4 difficulty settings. The soundtrack is also very dark and ambient. The controls are a bit of a pain, you definetely have to adjust them. But theyr'e solid and fully customizable. This is one of the most fun shooting games Iv'e ever played. It's fast, simple, and intense. Doom 3 is great and all, but I still think this one is the best!
