No, this will not hold soups. It is a plate. I am not familiar with the Indian dal.

Are these paper(cardboard type), foam or plastic?

They are a cardboard type, not plastic at all. Probably why they are biodegradable. We were very happy with them at a 35 person party we had of Italian food. We wanted to keep the foods separated and eliminate having to carry an extra salad bowl, keep the spaghetti sauce away from the cut up fresh fruit, etc. They did the trick and would highly recommend!

can you burn these in the fire when camping?

It would seem fine to burn them. They look just like a paper product. They also decompose.
