It gives just enough for a comfortable and stable grip. The black area at the bottom of the handle is hard plastic. This is the most comfortable and stable cane I have ever used. But one caveat: get the backup cane tips as well. The bottom of the cane is just sharp cut metal tubing the pushes through the bottom quickly. Or better still, use my ingenious solution. After my 3rd tip change in 2 months, I looked at the tip closely and realized a penny fits the bottom perfectly. Secured it with a little duct tape and then put on the rubber cane tip. Abe Lincoln works like a charm! 2 months now and my latest tip shows no sign of wear despite heavy daily use! **Q: Does anyone know where I'd be able to buy additional rubber tip for this wonderful cane? Not the quad pod which I have and honestly don't like.** A: I suggest trying at the Hugo manufacturer's website online, www.hugoanywhere.com for this cane tip. If your cane is like mine, it uses a 3/4" tip, and the Hugo part number was 731-001. It may be called an Ultra-Grip Cane Tip. **Q: Description states that it folds away in a black canvas bag. Several reviews state no canvas bag included. Hugo, does it include a bag?** A: I did not receive a canvas bag. The cane handle design is easy on my arthritic wrists so I don't mind not receiving the bag. **Q: Can the tip be replaced?** A: Unfortunately? No. I have not be able to find a replacement tip for my 2009 Hugo brand cane, reason for which I had to buy this new one ... However, this NEW Hugo Mobility Cane is GREAT!! Much lighter in weight and also has an ergonomic handle that fit nicely in the ball of my hand ...LOVE IT!!
