One slides into the other. I have this set and use them daily. One of the best purchases I have made for plumbing work. **Q: What size is open end and length** A: There are 2 open ends. One is a basic 12 point 1/2" wrench. The other is a combination 9/16" & 15/16" square wrenches. Tool screwed together is 1' long but you can make it 2 pieces; one 1' long, the other is 8" long. It seats inside handle of longer wrench. **Q: How do you use this tool on a straight valve** A: You COULD remove the stem, but it seems like an extra step when you can use pliers or a wrench with it to hold the valve while you tighten the nut. Most plumbers I’ve known do that. A crescent wrench to the valve body won’t scratch the finish. **Q: Is this a “Bait and Switch”?** A: Ok have this tool. There is no bait and switch. It is 2 wrenches,but one slides and screws together with the other.
