Designed between 1969 and 1972 and first flown into space in 1981, the NASA Shuttle will have flown almost 140 missions by the time it is retired in 2010. David Baker describes the origin of the reusable launch vehicle concept during the 1960s, its evolution into a viable flying machine in the early 1970s, and its subsequent design, engineering, construction and operation. The Shuttle's internal layout and systems are explained, including the operation of life support, electrical power production, cooling, propulsion, flight control, communications, land and avionics systems. Excellent technical guide to the shuttle
This book contains a large amount of detailed information about the shuttle craft. Very good photos and diagrams. However, there was little on the history of the missions. There was some details on selected missions that the author thought was important (which I agreed with his selection). But this book was written as a technical guide and it certainly succeeded in this regard. I highly recommend this book.

The rocket engines- amazing!
The level of detail was high for a reader like me. Easy and fun reading for an engineer that appreciate details.

Broken spine
Looks like a great book for a very curious child about space. Unfortunately, it arrived with a broken spine. Packed in a bubble envelope.

Haynes Owners Workshop Manual
These are great books if you are interested in getting more technical information than is normally available in other publications. Lots of details.

Amazing, succinct look into these amazing systems.
Enough detail to satisfy the practicing engineer and written simply enough to be appreciated by the layman.

An excellent description of how the shuttle is constructed and used
This "owner's manual" (!!) describes the design of the shuttle, how it is constructed and how it works in operation. There are copious good quality photographs showing various stages of construction, and also plenty of diagrams that add factual detail. The accompanying text is well written, not at all dry, and adds to the enjoyment of the book. The author has managed to navigate a sensible middle path between the two extremes of overwhelming the reader with technical detail or, on the contrary, just providing a sequence of pretty pictures - I'd say he has got the balance about right. You don't have to be an engineer or a technical expert to understand this book, although you will find it easier going if you know a little bit about space-flight and rocketry. (And even if you don't you will by the time you've finished reading it.) He also is clearly writing from personal experience combined with a good technical knowledge of the Shuttle and its operations, so this is not a hagiography. He is not afraid to criticise the technical and commercial shortcomings of the Shuttle's design, or NASA's failure to react to the clear warning signs that preceded the losses of Challenger and Columbia. In short an excellent manual that not only does what it says on the cover, but also goes well beyond this. I would recommend it highly.
