## Overview

The Zircon MultiScanner 740 is a professional-grade electronic wall scanner featuring four scanning modes to detect wood studs, metal objects, and live AC wiring up to 3 inches deep. Its unique floating head design and Auto Correcting Technology deliver precise results on all wall surfaces, while the integrated erasable marker streamlines marking tasks. With WireWarning detection and an ergonomic, battery-saving design, the MS 740 ensures safe, accurate, and efficient wall scanning for any project.

## Description

The Zircon MultiScanner 740 center finding electronic wall scanner quickly and easily locates studs, detects metal, locates live, unshielded AC wires and allows you to mark your target. Complete with the latest technology in density detecting software and circuitry, an ergonomic body design, and an erasable marking system. Unlike other wall sensors, scanners and stud finders, the MS 740 is uniquely designed with a "floating head" that keeps the scanning surface level on textured or rough surfaces so results are more accurate. The 4-mode switch makes it easy to change functions while the ultra-bright display screen, dual SpotLite Pointing System, and audio tone all indicate the location of the target. The Signal Strength Indicator helps to distinguish between shallow and deep targets. The MultiScanner 740 also includes ACT (Auto Correcting Technology) that automatically corrects common user errors, such as when scanning begins over a stud, in addition to a low battery indicator to alert its users to replace its battery for optimal performance results. In StudScan mode, the multifunctional 740 locates the center, edges, and direction of wood or metal studs up to 3/4 of an inch (19 mm) deep. Switch over to DeepScan mode and double the scanning depth to 1.5 inches (38 mm). Metal Scan mode of the MS740 provides the ability to locate non-ferrous metal, such as copper pipes, up to 1.5 inches (38 mm) deep and ferrous metal, such as rebar, up to 3 inches (75 mm) deep. Using Metal Scan mode, studs can be found behind lath and plaster walls, tile, drywall and stucco walls by identifying the consistent pattern of screw or nail heads in the studs. Additionally, the MS 740 is programmed with a WireWarning Detection feature that indicates the presence of live unshielded electrical wires up to 2 inches (50 mm) deep when using the stud and metal scan modes. To detect, locate, map, and trace the live wires, simply switch over to the AC Scan function which finds and traces live, unshielded AC wiring up to 2 inches (50 mm) deep. Then use the integrated, erasable marker to note the progression of the wires, studs, or other objects behind the walls. With the Zircon MS740, you can safely maneuver through the most complicated of projects with the professional confidence that comes from owning a Zircon.

Review: Confident results - I would like to preface this review with that I am an average joe that needs the use of a stud-finder about once every 6 months, or whenever the missus buys a new mirror or something. I've had this unit for 4 months now and have used it on two occasions. With other beeping stud finders I would find myself very much second guessing where the studs are, going back and forth, back and forth - really trying to triangulate where that 2x4 is, and with previous units I have missed a stud. I find with the Zircon MS 740 I am far more confident with my results. As expected, I still make a couple extra sweeps to make sure I get it right the first time, but the results have been much more decisive. I don't really have any cons about the unit. I like the built in marker (that ended up being much more handy that I gave it credit for) and the Stud Interface is pretty neat. I like that the unit does not turn on until it is engaged on a flat surface as well. Also I'm still running on the same 9-volt battery that I started out with. So, I'm a happy camper. Hope this review helps the next chap :)
Review: Zircon MS740 MultiScanner Stud Finder - Loaded with Features! - The Zircon MS740 MultiScanner is everything you could wish for and more. It takes one 9V Battery to operate and it has so many features that I couldn’t possibly write about them all. It scans for studs, metal and AC wires to name a few. The screen lights up brightly with easy to read indicators. There’s an integrated marking feature so you don’t have to look for a pencil every time you need to mark the location of studs and the list goes on. You’ll be better off reading the details of what this handy tool offers on the Zircon website or in the description on desertcart. I absolutely love this tool. It feels so ergonomically comfortable in the hand while using it and you simply press it down against the wall to activate the power with automatic shutoff as you release the pressure from the wall. So no more worrying about draining your batteries because you forgot to shut off the device. Loaded with Pros, I can’t think of any Cons, but I’ll update this review if something comes up. Highly recommended MultiScanner. I’m sorry I didn’t get it sooner. It would’ve saved A LOT of time, frustration and descruction of walls that need to be patched up. Just get it and thank me later.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: I am a woodworker, and wondering if this unit will detect nails and other metal objects in rough cut lumber. Some of the lumber is 2 inches+ thick.**
A: Hello. No, the MS740 would not work to detect nails in rough cut lumber, because it needs to be depressed against the scanning surface the whole time that it is scanning. A better tool for this application would be the Zircon MetalliScanner M40. Thank you.

**Q: Can i use 9v lithium battery? it has a max typical voltage of 9.6v.**
A: Hello. We do not recommend using a lithium battery. Thank you.

**Q: Can i glue a neodymium magnet to the wall-facing side to detect nails without compromising the function of zircon edge finding stud sensors?**
A: I have not tried it but I believe you can use the metal scan to find nail heads.

**Q: Will this detect through plaster walls?**
A: Yes it will. This is the best stud finder I have had. It works VERY well!

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Works as advertised, but... is it necessary?
*by P***L on April 14, 2017*

This works as advertised for detecting studs behind drywall. It does not seem to be very precise, but it appears to be sufficiently precise for such jobs as mounting a display, hanging a heavy painting, etc. What I question is whether this device is at all necessary to anyone. I can achieve similar precision by just tapping the drywall with my knuckles and listening for the change in tone as I tap along the wall. Gliding gently the vibrating plastic casing of a working electric razor along the wall achieves the same result - the change in tone reveals where the stud starts and where it ends. Perhaps this device is especially helpful for the detection of deeper studs, metal elements, and so forth. But I am very skeptical whether it is necessary at all for routine stud detection in an average house.
