Wonderful 2nd book in the series

*by J***S on Reviewed in the United States on January 10, 2012*

I would like to give this book 4.5 stars. This book (the second in the series after Psion Beta) picks up after the previous book (I'm a little confused on the timing as Jeffie mentions it has been a month but we see Sammy soon after the previous mission ends). The story is a bit more complicated this time and we get several characters' points of view --- from Jeffie and Wrobel back at headquarters to Sammy still in South America to a Thirteen called Queen. While the bulk of the story involves Sammy and his struggle to get back to the New World Government people with his information on the traitor, we also see Jeffie and Brickert coping with their loss. Al, the previous mission leader, deals with the fallout of the mission and his feelings of guilt. The book summary mentions that Kobe deals with his issues but that is a VERY small part of the book (and you see more of Al than of Kobe). The CAG people are determined to catch and kill Sammy.I'm very happy that this story didn't end with a big cliffhanger. There are still 3 more books in the series (Delta, Alpha and Omega) and I'm sure those will involve the "silent war" with the CAG. However, this book wraps up the primary storyline in the book. I enjoyed the author's writing and the storyline. Lately, I've been reading more independent fiction and I feel like this series is one reason I wade through so many mediocre to bad independently published books. This is a creative story, well-told by an author who cares about putting out a quality product. I did not notice any overt grammar, typo or formatting issues. Also, in the last book, I felt that Sammy was too much of a "Mary Sue" type of character who always excelled at everything and never really struggled once he got to the Psion facility. In this book, we see Sammy struggle and sometimes fail. As a result, his character felt more real to me in this book. I liked how he has more doubt and questions things by the end of the book. I also felt like Brickert and Al showed signs of maturing. Not sure how I felt about Jeffie in this book as she went back and forth too much on what to do with Kobe and whether she believed Sammy was still alive. The weaknesses of the book (and the reason I gave it only 4 to 4.5 stars): Sometimes the book was too confusing with flasbacks. While some of these were good (Queen's flashback about her parents), many were unneeded (e.g. Jeffie's flashbacks about the basketball game). I felt that many of these interrupted the flow of the story - for example, Jeffie's flashbacks about the basketball game went back and forth from the present day back to the flashback to the present day and then the flashback again. I also felt that I never really understood Wrobel's actions. The reason for his turning traitor happened a long time ago ..... what happened recently that made him decide to take this action? Finally, a few parts of the book did seem to drag a bit and I skimmed those pieces (e.g. Sammy and Psychology).Overall, this was a very strong book and, as long as the next book is reasonably priced, I will purchase the third book in the series to see what is in store for Sammy and friends. Again, I recommend this for adults and mature teens due to the violence (both explicitly discussed and implied) in the book.

    Better than the last!

Warning this may contain a few spoilers, but I'll try to minimize them and make 'em as ambiguous as possible. Sound like a deal? Anyways back on to the review: Loved it! The second to the epic Psion series not only expounds on what was already present, but also adds to the mix. I literally felt torn as Sammy was. I was surprised at how amazing this roller coaster of a book was, especially considering I read it just after reading the first and other epic novels such as the Maze Runner Trilogy. I can tell you truthfully that this book stands up to all of those books and might even surpass them. It was truly an epic ride. Ok enough foaming at the mouth from me; let me get to the actual facts that make this book fantastic. I felt like I was a part of the tale as I was reading it. Now, from an avid reader, I can tell you how hard it is for an author to capture this essence of reality and seal it into the pages of a book; it's tough, but Jacob Gowains does it masterfully. He adds in a gripping plot line, equally gripping subplots, and characters that you can actually fall in love with as reading ( my favorite = Albert He seems like a character that you can almost reach into the pages and touch). I know it sounds like I'm laying on really thick flattery here, but it is all really really true and I have no other way to explain it than this. Do yourself a favor and pick up this series and support this amazing artist of an author!

4 stars is too much; 3 may be too little; conflicted over this book.

I enjoyed book one. Then this book started OK and then became dark and disturbing. The torture was TOO MUCH (I DO NOT RECOMMEND this for the young - too much violence for YA???) There is no way to mentally/emotionally recover from his experiences - but of course he does.I SKIPPED as much as I could to avoid all the violence and death.I do like a number of the characters. I really don't know how to read this book! Why is this type of DARKNESS even necessary? It could have been great! One crazy detail: Toad and Sammy are starving! They do target practice on an apple tree and do not eat or collect the apples to eat later on their journey. Made no sense.Even though I hated parts of this, I liked enough to keep going. I read book 3 (MORE RESERVATION and major skipping of pages) but I kept going. So the author pulled me in - I wish he would write a book and not make it so gruesome and violent.
