Does it tarnsmit and receive or just one?

HC-05 is fully bi-directional - it will emulate an RS232 serial link. However, note that it will not communicate with IOS devices.

Could two of these communicate with each other, or does a phone have to be one of the communicators?

Good day, I hope this answer is useful for you. After the pairing is successful, it can be used as a full-duplex serial port. No need to understand any Bluetooth protocol, but only supports 8 data bits, 1 stop bit, and no parity communication format. This is also the most commonly used communication format, other formats are not supported. The interface is 3.3V, which can be directly connected to various microcontrollers (for Arduino/ 51/ AVR/ PIC/ ARM/ MSP430, etc.), and 5V microcontrollers can also be directly connected. Connect directly to the serial port of the single-chip microcomputer, and cannot pass through the MAX232 chip!

Its pins, are they outputing rs 232 or ttl signal?

It's neither but for interfacing treat them as TTL, 0-5 volts.

Use a bigger capacitor and you're good

If you've got servos and other hardware on the same rail, use bigger caps to cushion the voltage blows as well as divide your 5v incoming power to 3.3v otherwise it will continually reset. It still resets from time to time be less frequently after the larger caps and 3.3v.
