With a hot soapy sponge or brush. It isn't suitable for complete immersion as water would fill the mechanism. We love ours it is very capable.

Printed on the box is ‘BPA FREE’ so presumably this refers to the item as a whole. Could find no reference to specific parts in instructions booklet.

Can the whisk be used to froth milk in a standard coffee mug? Could it fit?

Yes. The end will fit a larger mug. But, you might decorate the walls with frothy milk. This is a powerful beast... Probably want a smaller gadget for just frothing milk. This is great for smoothies and mushing up soup.
