Review: Very nice reader - So I'm new to "readers," but have read off my tablet for a long time. I'm not a big reader, but I'm trying to do that more, so a nice, light-weight, dedicated reader seemed like it would help. I chose this one because it has OverDrive already in place and ready to go -- and I read mostly library loan books, so I thought that would be more convenient. I had a couple of hiccups getting that working (mostly my ignorance). I don't have any previous experience to compare it to (except it's far superior to reading on a tablet), but I'll say that reading is a pleasure. Good screen, touch-screen or buttons work perfectly. I thought the small screen would bother me, but it's so easy to page up it's not an issue at all. I love that it has auto-rotate, I'm learning that for holding it when I'm reading outside I like vertical where I can hold the large side handle, but I have a "thing" to hold it while I sit leisurely by the window indoors, and then I prefer horizontal. It's okay to be spoiled :-) It has very nice and easy adjustments - just slide a bar to increase type size or brightness. I like their typeface and spacing options. I've had it for four days and I'm mostly playing with it so far, and it's lost half its charge in that time. I don't think that's a huge deal, but others have commented about it. I'm struggling a little about just one thing -- it does not support the X-Ray feature that Kindle has to keep track of characters -- for whatever reason I have a problem remembering the names of the many secondary characters even a day later, and I have used X-Ray pretty regularly to keep up. I like that feature. It may only available on Kindles, but for an expensive and high-end reader, I think it should have such useful features as this. But the quality of the screen (and the bigger size) are top notch.
Review: Best purchase of the year - I waited until Black Friday to buy my Kobo, because I thought the original was a bit steep. Now I think of something happened to mine, I'd immediately buy it again. Full price. It is THAT good. I don't even think I need to worry because it's very sturdy, and I purchased a case to keep it in my bag. The Kobo is amazing, the text is pristine and crisp, and it's so comfortable to hold. The buttons are very convenient, too, especially knowing that other brands who offer them, do it for a lot more money. I think the Kobo is currently the best option when it comes to ereaders, so it's worth every penny. Edit: it's been over a month and I'm still in love! I was swayed by the 7' screen and the fact that it's waterproof. I have pretty small hands (I'm 4'11''), so I was worried it'd be too big and uncomfortable to carry everywhere, but it's really not! It somehow looks bigger in pictures, but it's about the size of a paperback, only a little wider. It is pretty lightweight and I can read while holding it with one hand. You can switch up the button commands very easily, I do it a lot when going from holding with one hand to the other. As I said, I have freakishly small hands and I've had no issues so far, I think the size and weight are perfect! The only thing is that the cover does add some weight. I don't know how well they fare with bumps and being dropped (mine feels very sturdy but I worry about damaging the screen), but I keep mine in its case when I'm not using it because of the weight, and luckily I haven't dropped it over since I got it! It's been a joy to have it. I really think you should go ahead and take the plunge!

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Can i download overdrive ?**
A: You don't have to download anything. The integration between your Kobo Libra 2 reader and Overdrive is truly seamless. On the Kobo you can search your library's Overdrive holdings and place a hold or check out a book. If you put a hold on a title, you'll get notified...on your Kobo!...when it's ready. Much better than the round trip through multiple sites that you see with Overdrive & Kindle.

**Q: Is this ads free?**
A: Yes, ads are an Amazon Kindle thing, not a Kobo thing. You may get 'recommendations' for your next book you may want to read. Unsure if to you, that qualifies as an Ad.

**Q: Did they fix the uneven lighting from the first edition? i was hoping they would add more led lights, like the 25 lights that the oasis has.**
A: Hello,I am contacting you on behalf of Rakuten Kobo. We have received your inquiry regarding the back light of the Kobo Libra 2. A slight, consistent shadow along the borders of the screen is normal for eReaders, as the display is positioned slightly below the black frame of the device; eReaders use electronic ink technology to offer you the most comfortable reading experience, with print-on-paper feel. The light shines down on the page, as opposed to the LCD screen technology used in smartphones and tablets, which are lit from behind the display – providing a different lighting experience. If you have any other questions before purchasing, you can can contact our support team. Thanks!

**Q: does it have a SD card slot?**
A: Technically, yes. You have to completely remove the back off of the Libra 2, then contend with adhesive on the internal microSD card slot. However, it is not a simple drop-in of a larger card. You need to copy the image of the internal card, write the image to your larger microSD card, then expand the partition on the larger card - something I did using gparted on Linux. Once successful, you will see the Libra 2 reporting the higher capacity of storage.

Pro tip: if you go this route, search for the method online, and read carefully. You run a very good risk of destroying your reader if you are not careful.

Short answer: no external microSD card slot is available on this device. The internal microSD card can be upgraded with a bit of effort and research.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Best current E-reader but poor Kobo customer service
*by C***R on November 26, 2021*

I have a 2014 Kindle Paperwhite, which still works and looks amazing, but wanted a new E-reader with all the new features. So I order a few new ones and spent a whole week scrutinizing the new Kindle Paperwhite, the Kindle Oasis and this Kobo Libra 2, and each time I kept coming back to the Kobo as my choice for e-reading. The New Kindle Paperwhite I eliminated almost immediately, the contrast is just too poor to me, sure the screen is bright, but the letters are so dull and faded looking. The Kindle Oasis is still, in my opinion, the best Kindle E-reader. The auto brightness works great, and man can the screen get bright white, and the letter contrast is better than the Kindle Paperwhite. if I didn’t have the Kobo to compare, I would have stayed with this model. Still lacks some of my favourite features that Kobo has. I also find the Kindle software clunky and requires too many steps to make simple changes. Now onto the Kobo, it doesn’t have auto brightness, but it does have auto Natural Light, which works fantastic. Really don’t need auto brightness, with one finger you can increase or decrease the brightness by swiping on the left side of the screen. Great auto rotation feature that works for landscape mode too. With the Oasis you must go into the menus to select landscape mode, a big pain. Pluses for Kobo: The new flared edge is perfect and the soft back makes is very comfortable to hold Auto natural light adjustment One finger brightness control Auto rotation in all aspects Battery life is stellar Screen background colour is slightly off white, with natural light off, I find it easy on the eyes Software is very intuitive and fast Turns on really fast and in one step (Both Kindles turn on slowly and then you have to swipe the screen) Software feature set overall is better, page in book and pages left in chapter on screen Now onto the biggest plus for me and what should be the most important, the clarity, crispness, and contrast of the letters. This Kobo is really crisp and clear, and the background colour is a perfect shade of white to enhance the reading experience. On both Kindle units the screen is just really bright white and the letters/words suffer from lower contrast Update: I find Kobo customer service to be lacking, they are not accommodating like Amazon. Another thing to considered, if you share your books with a family member, note that you cannot with Kobo.
