Is there any way to switch the headlamp off without cycling through the modes or, at least, avoiding the strobe?

Great little head touch . 3 modes . 1 click super bright LED , 2 clicks and the LED is dimmer , 3 clicks and it’s a strobe light . . Click again and it’s off . From on to off takes in seconds Value for money and super bright . Great buy

Will this torch fit over a hard hat?

Yes, working on the railway I use it over my hard hat.

I would want this for running. Never used one before, would the batteries remain bright for a race lasting around an hour?

You could put your own longer life batteries in? Its fabulous - I use it for walking the dog in the pitch black on our caravan site, its perfect in that being able to tilt it means it doesn't shine through other peoples windows, and it lights up the dog and the space around us brilliantly. I opted for the cheaper one to start off, but won't be changing it.

Will this fit a five year old?

My wife informs me that with it's adjustrable / elasticated strap, she believes that this WILL fit your 5 year old. We do hope they get much enjoyment/use out of this excellent product
