The Southwire M400TP has a simple design with one button press and removable remote that stores in the unit, similar to some toning wands. It identifies opens, shorts, splits, miswires (reversed and crossed), short to shield, properly wired cross-over cables, and a voltage warning...a nice add. There is also a toner feature that allows tone on individual conductors, individual pairs, and on all wires simultaniously. Note: a toning wand is NOT included. Excellent instructions are provided. Documents reflect a 2-yr warranty. The brown case has a slightly rubber-like feel and easily fits in the palm of the hand and a tool bag slot. The cable tester's top RJ-45 jack has a dust/rain cap to prevent unwanted objects from entering that area. No expensive button cell batteries needed like some other testers. It ships with two AAA batteries. The screen also has backlighting for those times when you're testing from dark closets or beneath desks. A recommendation for the Southwire team --on a future redesign, possibly recess the mode button so it cannot be accidentally pressed while in the bag, and maybe a small microfiber pouch to cover the plastic screen while in your job bag. Overall, a really nice compact continuity tester with slick features. Don't change other things with this design, its close to perfect.

When it works it works great. When it works. I have gotten to the point that I just leave the battery cover off because I am constantly having to pull the batteries to reset it because it freezes. I’m not even running through the menu, it just freezes. I hate this thing and shouldn’t have purchased it based on the other reviews. Only reason I did purchase it is because I have an identical one purchased a few years ago from a big box store and it works flawlessly, but I loaned it out and it would have been quicker just getting a second. I advise against purchasing this one.

If you need a cable tester this is the one I would recommend as the best bargain. Straight forward design, 100% accurate readings in my experience with it and also built like a brick. I have not been particularly gentle with it and it has barely a mark on it. It also acts as a toner if you need one in a pinch.

It works great when it works, ive had to reset it several times due to issues on the screen, pulling out the little piece on the bottom is a bit sketchy and feels like youre going to break the plastic. Battery life is great, def will have it in my pouch for testing at all times

I am a new network field technician. My first cable tester was the cheapest tester that is very common on Amazon under many different brands. Each pin lights up one at a time making it impossible to take a single picture of a tested cable. HDE RJ45 RJ11 RJ12 Cat5 Cat6 UTP Network Cable Tester for LAN Phone Wire Test Tool Since it is quite common for help desks to request a photo of a successful cable test, this Southwire meter is much better for this. Attached are two photos of good straight and crossover cables. The included user guide is well-written and understandable.

When it works, it works great. The problem is I need to keep removing both batteries, give it a moment, then reinstall the batteries every single time I need to use it. Otherwise the display is going crazy and is unusable.

So at first it worked great and i was extremely happy! The next day it stopped working. I returned it and got a new one and the exact thing happened. So i returned the 2nd one and got a 3rd one and low and behold it happened again!!!! 3 times in a row! Now if you pull out the batteries and put them back in it works normal but then problem happens again later, where the screen goes all funky with numbers and its unusable. Im sorry but i will no longer support Southwire products. I ended up going with another brand.

Out of the box worked perfectly but next day I found it was malfunctioning- needed to cycle batteries to correct. Ordered replacement & issue repeated (4 & 8 flash and button does nothing, batteries must be removed to fix). Looking at other manufacturers.
