Yes this will work on fixing the hole, but first , get drywall mesh that is self adhering. And use it as directed, on the package. And then apply the paste as directed **Q: Can you nail or screw into the patch to hang a towel rack ?** A: Yes I used an anchor and hanged a towel rack from it. Use the mesh which comes with the kit.
