I had the same one when I got my birch logs. I guess you could put cement in the planters, which I didn't do though. Instead, I put some soil in, some rocks/pebbles and/or stones. Plus, I literally threw in junk that I wasn't using or didn't need. Newspaper, packing material...kitchen sink (kidding). I've got 2 big planters with 4 tall logs in each planter and so far they have lasted very well, even outside year round. I love them! I used them to make a custom chuppa and they were perfectly straight with just enough "natural" variation. The lengths were perfect so drilling my holes was a breeze. also the ends!! they cut them so flush!! that i didn't have to trim off anything, they literally were squared up as soon as i put them on the bases.
