Film Theory and Criticism

The spine is pretty broken, where it looks like some of the pages might fall out. The book is obviously used but it does not retract from the ability to read it. I'm just scared the pages might fall out.

I'm reading this for a film theory class and the essays are absolutely ridiculous. Very few are immediately understandable, some are just ridiculous (Mulvey's male gaze theories, for example, though they're probably widely accepted and referred to), and all use incredibly technical language and jargon where they could easily be using colloquial language. (For example: 'dyadic' is used instead of 'binary', 'dual', 'dichotomy', or other more commonly used words. I encountered 'antinomy' and honestly thought that somebody had misspelled and misused 'antimony'. Words like 'diegetic' are good to know because they directly apply to film theory, but these? No. (In other news, 'antinomy' is so ridiculous that the spellcheck on this review thinks that it isn't a word. Great.)) I've read the essays on auteur theory several times and it still took two class sessions to understand what the heck the point was.I mean, I'm pretty sure that most film theory is BS anyway, but this takes it to a whole new level.

It arrived just in time, which was great. The only thing is that this seems to have had a little bit of water damage at the top of the pages. I had to pull some pages apart, which led me to think that. Otherwise, excellent condition. No visible sign of the said water damage, which is good.

A great text for an introduction into the world of film theory

I bought this book for one of my classes in film school and I continuously refer back to it's text as a practicing filmmaker. It is important to use theory while making a film.

Greatest thing I ever did was get this from Amazon and not my school. It was about 70% less than school price and the exact same book. Will DEF do this again!!!!!!!

The book had more wear than I expected but it sufficed.

Great price and great condition, but I bought the wrong edition for my film class.

the pages keep falling out of the book

Not used this book yet but the amount of information within it will allow me to complete my critical approaches part two essays and presentations. Brilliant book for any film student or enthusiast.
