Durable Reusable Tray That Saves Money and Works With Pretty Litter
We purchased our first PetSafe ScoopFree Reusable Tray in September 2023, and it has held up beautifully. We originally used it with crystal litter, but after adding another cat to our household who did not like the crystals, we switched to Pretty Litter. The tray has worked just as well with Pretty Litter as it did with the original crystal litter. We now have two of these trays since we have two cats, and both have performed consistently without any issues. ⸻ ✅ Durable and Easy to Clean ✔ Sturdy ✔ No warping after nearly two years of use ✔ No odor or residue build-up ✔ Handles frequent washing without issue 💰 Big Cost Savings ✔ Saved us money over time ✔ Paid for itself within the first few months ✔ Continues to perform like new 🐱 Works with Different Litters ✔ Works perfectly with Pretty Litter ✔ Rake clears as expected ✔ No tracking or mess issues ✔ Performs reliably in a multi-cat household ⛔️ Cons • Requires manual rinsing and drying, which takes more effort than disposable trays • If using liners, you must make sure the rake teeth do not catch on improperly placed edges 🔄 Update (2025): Our litter boxes are set up in our basement. After bringing home our second cat, who is particular about her litter environment, we added a dehumidifier to keep the area consistently dry. The reusable trays have continued to perform perfectly in this setup. Even with continuous use and environmental adjustments, there are no cracks, leaks, or odor issues. We also started using scoop liners to make litter changes even easier. They significantly reduce how often we need to deep clean the tray and keep everything much cleaner overall. The key is proper placement. The liner needs to sit smoothly and not be tucked under the tray sides where the rake moves. If it is not seated correctly, the rake teeth can catch on it and litter day goes back to our pre-liner routine. If you are considering liners, this is the set we use: https://a.co/d/08JAW8if After almost two years of daily use, both trays still look great and fit tightly in the automatic boxes. They have been a solid long-term investment for our household. ⭐ Final Thoughts: If you want a budget-friendly and reliable solution for your automatic litter box, this reusable tray is worth it. It lasts, saves money, and works great even with alternative litters like Pretty Litter. We bought a second one once we added another cat, and I would absolutely buy it again.

Environmental the better choice.
I purchased an automatic cat litter system with disposable litter and trays. I was pleased to find the reusable tray. So much better for the environment. Economical too since I can purchase the litter separately.

Way better than the disposable ones
This fit with my litter box well. The metal tray is much more durable and better quality than the disposable ones. You don't scoop with this type, the petsafe box cleans itself. It works well, especially if you line it with a plastic bag to stop the smell from lingering. This is my tertiary litter box, and only one of my cats uses it every so often, so I only have to replace the litter etc. monthly. If he used it more often or if both cats used it, I don't know that it would be cost effective. I think more usage would make the urine pool more. since he uses it infrequently, i haven't had any issues with urine leakage or pooling.

10 days for 2 cats
We have been using the Petsafe tray insert since Dec 2018. It is fantastic - we have had no issue with the magnets or litter overflow over the sides or waste overflow. I read other reviews saying that was an issue, but we have not experienced that. We buy the two packs of petsafe crystal litter. One pack of lavender scent in this tray lasts 10 days - any longer, and the system starts to smell. We are a two cat household with a 9lb and 15lb cat and they are on a grain free diet so they poop pretty frequently. They also urinate in the same spots, which I’ll get more into. The thing I dislike most about this reusable tray is that with the crystals, you’re likely to get urine soup if your cats are like mine and like to piddle in the same spots. This is a failure of the system, not the tray though. However the tray has stained where these frequent spots are. My cats are scratchers, so the tray is scratched and is roughed up in some areas so combined with the urine staining, it’s not a fun clean. I have been thinking of putting a puppy pad liner in and then putting the litter on top. The waste trap is great, but I will probably attach a carbon filter to the trap closure because the plastic has absorbed the smell - replacements are fairly cheap though for the waste trap closure (not the magnet bar, but the other plastic part) and I’m considering buying a new one because they’re about $8. In order to clean the tray, I take the system off and pull the tray into a giant garbage bag. I then shake the tray. Most of the litter comes off. However cats pee in the same spots, so some areas do not. I usually take a towel and run it over and then soak the tray with a heavy foam cleaner. It takes about 20min or so to change the tray. We have left the tray for as long as 25 days and that was a nightmare. 10 days seems to be our perfect number before it starts to smell. Some times we can push it to 14 days. Overall, we spend about $24 on litter a month - I was spending $30 on traditional litter every month, yet I was scooping every day and it smelled so I am fine with the savings. —— Edit July 2021 - we used the insert from Dec 2018 to September 2020. In September of 2019, I started student teaching and switched to the box cartridges because I was exhausted cleaning the plastic insert so throughly every 10 days. After using a 6 pack of box cartridges, I went back to using the insert and alternating with a box cartridge every other use. When the plastic insert was not being used, I would put it in the dishwasher (top rack) on sanitize and do a cycle with just it and no dishes. Through this type of care, I eked out a few more months of use before finally throwing it away Sept 2020 and switching to the box cartridges. I would say I got at least 1 full year of use out of the reusable insert tray before it became too disgusting to use anymore. With the reusable insert, I was paying $24 a month for litter. I would estimate in the year of use, I spent $338 (36 bags of crystals + insert). With the cartridges, I pay $42 a month for 3. If I buy in bulk, I can get it down to about $35 a month. I would estimate in the year of use, I spent approx $500 (36 cartridges). In Aug 2020, we upgraded our PetSafe Scoopfree system to the more expensive wifi enabled box and it’s partially the reason why we now fully use the cartridges. We change the cartridges after the box has been used 70-80 times and it’s more efficient to go by rakes than days. I plan on buying a new reusable insert soon and going back to using it.

9+ Years of Using PetSafe Litter Boxes
My first 7 years I would buy the paper trays and throw these paper trays away. Costly - YES. Easy - YES. Bad for the Environment - YES. But it was when I moved from a large home to a small condo that these paper trays take up too much storage space and filled up my smaller outdoor trash can service. So I went with these plastic ones. I've had them for two years. It's HALF the price for the cystal. $8 per change versus $16. I get 100 to 130 visits before I need to change and that's not very saturated. I guess different cats pee differently than some of these other reviews. I have a Calico and a tortie cat. Mine are female, not sure if that matters. The cleaning trick is to put the tray into the trash bag, for me 90-100% falls into the bag. For what sticks, I use a cat litter box pooper scooper to push the rest off. Grab a bottle of Urine Be Gone (enzyme) spray, do a light spray, grab 6-7 paper towels (too many just so it doesn't get on your hands, you could use less if you used gloves) and wipe it down. Good as new, no smell. The paper ones can be cleaned this way as well, they last quite a long time before needing to dispose of them. I didn't need to get a larger outdoor trash bin which also gives me more garage space. This solved three issues. The cost was A LOT and now it's worth it, I don't have to store a bunch of paper trays and the space they took up throwing them away. Obviously better for the environment. To me is a win-win-win. Cons: The little plastic flap that you attach to the poop cover falls off occasionally from the one of my cats kicking the litter a bit aggressively. I plan to just permanently attach it with two screws. It's not something that I have to do though. Another con is the price is pricey, but it pays for itself after 6 changes. It's more work.

Reusable tray is sturdy and reduces waste
This reusable tray is a great upgrade if you want less waste than the disposable option. The plastic feels durable and fits the ScoopFree system well. Cleaning is straightforward, and paired with crystal litter it does a solid job with odor control. Nice balance of convenience and reusability for ScoopFree owners.

Too smelly, but cat loves it
The litterbox for which this tray is made is a wonderful thing. My cat was peeing all over the bedroom because she hated her old litterbox so much (and I'm dumb enough that it took me 6 months to realize this). She is 100% happy with the Scoop Free litterbox because it's always perfectly clean. The reusable litter tray has been a must for me because I simply cannot afford to buy the disposable refills. I have two cats that use the box and the price of refills is too high for my budget. So I'm very thankful for the reusable tray because it has saved me hundreds of dollars. There's a downside, though, and that's the smell. After a few days, this thing really stinks. As other reviewers have mentioned, the lid doesn't seal off the poo the way the disposable tray does. Most people probably buy this box so they don't have to scoop; with this reusable tray, you'll end up scooping again. Not as often, but every other day. I'm not sure I'd keep it if my cat wasn't so blissfully happy with it. And that's a big part of the equation: if you have a persnickety cat and a small budget, this is still the way to go. UPDATE: I can't take the smell any longer. I bleach this thing once a week and put new crystal litter in it and after two days, yuck. I assume the urine has gotten down into the scratches in the plastic. This box works so well when it has the expensive refills in it, and smells so bad when you use the environmentally-friendly, affordable reusable tray. I'm tremendously frustrated and fear the cat will retaliate by whizzing on the carpet again.
