When you pull the ring out of the base/housing, then the jaws will close. When the cable is run through the ring, you are unable to push the ring into the base/housing. Unless the kayak has something equivalent to this rod, it it not likely to work. **Q: What is the diameter of the ring on the end? I also purchased the thick cable w combo lock made to go with it and they seem to fit well together (have to use a little force to pull cable through lock, but thickness of cable is what prevents the lock from opening so seems to work just as designed).
