"In their new book, Educating the Human Brain, Michael Posner and Mary Rothbart boldly bring the newest branch of developmental psychology--developmental cognitive neuroscience--into this tradition. The authors' goal is straightforward--to take our burgeoning knowledge of the development of the human brain and apply that information to the way we educate. It is an ambitious undertaking, and the authors have done an admirable job. Their volume is at once true to the complexity of the science of brain development and to the techniques used to measure brain activity (functional neuroimaging, electroencephalography and evoked response potentials), and at the same time highly approachable for the novice to neuroscience. It is a worthwhile read, both for educators looking for guidance on how new neuroscientific research can inform their practice and for developmental psychologists hoping to bend their research programs toward practical applications in the classroom! ." --Cognitive Development

Michael I. Posner and Mary K. Rothbart have for many years combined their formidable talents in explorations of human development. In this wonderful new book, they have distilled work that views human behavior through a synthesis of neuroscience, individual differences, and social context. The relevant material emerges in a manner accessible to neuroscientists, social scientists, educators, and concerned parents alike. Their contributions will guide our thinking for years to come. --Marcus E. Raichle, MD, Washington University School of Medicine, St. Louis, MO Anybody who thinks neuroscience is not yet ready for the field of education had better read this book. Posner and Rothbart lay out a sensible and accessible story that will impact the classroom for years to come. --Michael S. Gazzaniga, PhD, Director, Sage Center for the Study of Mind, University of California, Santa Barbara Educating the Human Brain is a thoughtful and compassionate book, rich in up-to-the-minute research on the myriad aspects of the child's learning brain. The combination of extraordinary scientific expertise and clear communication makes this book a wonderful resource for educators and psychologists or for anyone with the desire to understand and nurture children's social, cognitive, and sensory development in the context of solid research. --Guinevere Eden, DPhil, Director, Center for the Study of Learning, Georgetown University, Washington, DC Two giants in their fields--cognitive neuroscience and child development--have teamed up to write a fascinating overview of the neuroscience of education. This book is a much-needed antidote to the inaccuracy and overinterpretation of so many contemporary books on education and the brain. Posner and Rothbart's science is first rate, their vision of education inspiring, and their writing crystal clear. I recommend this book to scientists, educators, and anyone interested in the biological bases of human potential and its development. --Martha J. Farah, PhD, Director, Center for Cognitive Neuroscience, and Professor of Psychology, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia

An update on neuro and cognitive aspects of education

*by K***K on Reviewed in the United States on May 25, 2010*

These authors are able to organize and summarize the findings of research over several decades. The chapters begin with early theories of cognitive development and bring the reader up-to-date on the state of the art research and implications to the serious "student" of childhood development--including educators, clinicians and researchers. The early chapters provide an introduction to research conducted on the topic of infant and child development. Topics include sensory development, executive attention, and conflict resolution. Later chapters relate these findings to specific academic topics, such as reading and math.At a time when a proliferation of "brain based" books are filling the bookstores, this volume is research based and presents the state of the art with a reminder that the findings should be implemented with a "broad brush". The authors remind the reader that the findings from the neurosciences and genetics continue to be unraveled. While not intended for light reading, the material is presented in a manner to provide a wealth of information related to the education of the human brain. There are many useful findings which can assist the professional in addressing the needs while preparing this age group for their future.

Ranging from brain imaging, to modern genetics, to development, this book provides a comprehensive overview of the field, bringing together a masterful summary of these topics in a fully readable and engaging way. This should be read by students in education and both experimental and counseling psychology. These topics are also highly relevant to the field of psychotherapy.
