is it waterproof if so how deep can you go underwater

Not waterproof. Maybe water resistant to a point but it's not sealed at the speaker, so under a faucet may cause problems, and the led and power button would leak with any real depth. I've seen videos where guys have sealed the speaker with silicone.

Does it come with batteries,if not, what type?

mine did come with batteries but I have owned it awhile and that may have changed. it is stored for the winter, cant remember if it was 9 volt or double AA.

A single 9 volt battery. Not rechargeable in unit.

How far away can the detector be from the ground to pick up a signal.if it is only 9 inches long do i need to stoop o er to use it

This is a pin pointer so what it does is help pin point small items so if the object is not on top of the ground you will need to dig a little and it also depends on how big the object is i have expensive pin points and this one work great i will be buy another one love it
