We concentrate the culture and add sodium alginate in the presence of calcium ions- and POOF- algae beads are born. These simple and robust beads can be used repeatedly in experiments in the classroom. Store in the refrigerator or leave on your bench top in light bright enough to read. You do not need to do anything to them for them to stay healthy for weeks. Experiments: Dark and Light: Show if photosynthesis or respiration is taking place. You should see color change in the day, and overnight return to yellow. That way you are on-scale when you want to run experiments with your students. We have found them to be active for over 4-months in our labs, so I would safely say 30-days for typical classroom activities. Each one comes with a pH indicator card. The indicator changes color with the pH. **Q: Can I freeze algae beads for future use (next school year)?** A: Freezing algae beads: Probably will not live. When you freeze cells ice crystals form. Those crystals grow and cut through the cell membranes rupturing the integrity if the cell. Thus when the cells are thawed the cellular material spills from the cell... and they are dead. There are some procedures to store cells in liquid nitrogen.
