Question 1

What happens if I do not use the thumb drive for an extended period of time and the battery dies? 1. Does the data remain secure? 2. Is the data lost?

Accepted Answer

The battery can be recharged by inserting into a powered USB port and has no effect on the data. Data will remain intact and secure even if the battery fully discharges due to a period of non-use. We incorporated a battery for convenience as it's easier to enter the PIN before connecting the drive to the USB port. Even if the battery was to malfunction the drive can be used by inserting into a USB port and then entering the PIN.

Question 2

Has anyone used this and the product has lasted for long time? Many of these products die in 6mths - 1 year

I bought mine on October 2019 and have two and all are working well.  I did lose the code on one and had to reset it, but I attribute that to bouncing around in my pocket hitting other things like keys and change.  I now wrap it in a cloth and have had no problem since.

How would this be any better than just using a $10 flash drive with Windows 10 bitlocker for security?

Our datAshur PRO2 is a PIN authenticated, hardware encrypted USB flash drive which employs real-time military-grade FIPS PUB 197 validated AES-XTS 256-bit encryption algorithm. Unlike Bitlocker, the encryption key is stored in a secure microcontroller. Hardware encryption dedicates a separate processor for authentication and encryption.

Additionally, another advantage of using hardware encryption is that the device can be used across multiple operating systems. Likewise, hardware-based full disk encryption is much faster than Bitlocker which is a disk encryption software. It is also important to know that every hardware-encrypted iStorage drive has a randomly generated encryption key that is unique.

What's the difference between the Pro2 and Personal?

One of the key differences between datAshur Pro2 and datAshur Personal2 is the certification. The datAshur Pro2 is certified to FIPS 140-2 Level 3, whereas datAshur Personal2 does not hold any certifications. With regards to the features, both datAshur Pro2  and datAshur Personal2 share the same features such as: having both admin and user PINs, read-only mode, timeout lock, brute force protection. The datAshur Pro2 also employs additional features such as One-time User Recovery PIN, Self-destruct PIN, Brute Force Limitation, bootable feature, and many more. Also, the datAshur Pro2 incorporates a Common Criteria EAL5+ (hardware certified) secure microcontroller.

In terms of security, both of these drives use AES-XTS 256-bit hardware encryption which is FIPS PUB 197 certified. The datAshur Pro2 is also water and dust resistant and is IP68 certified. Finally, the datAshur Pro2 is made of metal while on the contrary the datAshur Personal2 range is made of robust plastic.
