Your response will always be delayed and/or wrong. The dog will never associate the punishment with the action.The range can be sketchy at times, but it has worked across impressive distances and in deep woods. Holding the button rather than simply pushing it seems to help. People will object to these as inhumane because they are "shocker collars". However, the vibrate mode gives you a very effective and painless training tool if you're using it consistently and appropriately.When I first got her, my dog refused to obey any kind of verbal command. She was adopted from a shelter and really had not reason to be loyal to me. Treats got her attention, only as long as the scent/sound off in the distance wasn't more interesting. I started going on walks with her in a family owned patch of woods, using this as a training tool. I let her run free. If she gets too far, I call her name and whistle or clap. After a few seconds of that, if she doesn't respond, she gets buzzed with the vibrator a couple of times. If she doesn't respond to that, she gets a low zap. Didn't take long before I never had to use the shock mode. After a few hikes like this, I'm now able to walk with her loose among friends at camp sites.She may dart off after something, but a stern "no!" or "hey!" and whistle generally makes her come back. For some reason, certain dogs/sounds/scents get her more excited than others, so it still pays to be cautious about where she's going or what may be approaching.No matter the tool or style you use...I think the key thing is to spend time with your dog. You can't stuff them away in cages or keep them tied up and expect them to be "normal" once they finally get freedom. Granted, some dogs are harder to work with than others. Stick with a routine for a while, it may take time for things to sink in. Never give treats that aren't truly earned.
