I found that I have to slightly push the lid backward for the sliding lock to go fully into place. Then when the pedal is released, the lid stays fully out of the way when trash bags are removed and replaced. I also found that traditional trash bags from the store cannot fit onto the inner trash can without seriously stretching them. It takes some muscle. It means that children and the elderly may not be able to change the trash bag if using typical tall kitchen trash bags. I took the easy way out of this situation by ordering trash bags specifically for the trash can from the manufacturer (simplehuman). Because there are quite a few of the sample bags sent with the trash can, it took me weeks to run out of them. I found them to be quite superior to everyday trash bags because they are folded and not rolled, very easy to open and use, and they appear to be more durable than conventional trash bags. I am very satisfied with the trash bags and especially the trash can. This product is clearly more expensive than other trash cans, but it is very worth the cost and quite stylish.
