You CAN use them before, but they get better with each wash.Pros: It's large, absorbent, lightweight (smaller when folded than my regular terry-towels) and has a very resort feel. I personally like the rougher texture. They also dry stupid fast. Also breezy for hot days, so cool.Cons: They are a bit thin, so not a good towel to cuddle in warmth for. Also, others may not like the mild scratchy ness. It gets softer with subsequent washes.Overall, worth the price if you want a tough, light, absorbent towel with a resort vibe to them. Love the oversize 40 x 80 inches. I followed the instructions and washed in vinegar and a bit of soap before using. They did shrink up a bit as stated, but still ample sizing. They wrap around a large frame with extra material to tuck in so it stays on while I sit at the Vanity after a shower doing my make up and hair. Also, they do not take up much space. I bought a set for my son and Fiancée for Xmas as well.
