Both city and suburban waters turned strongly pink and the distilled water remained yellow. The residue in the distiller was also strongly positive for lead with a strong magenta result. With these swabs, which are activated by white vinegar, all three waters remained yellow and there was no indication of lead. I also tested various non-ferrous metals with known compositions such as brass, bronze, and copper. All were negative, as they should be, with these swabs. With the other, water activated, swabs, several samples of these metals were falsely positive. Both types of swabs were strongly positive with known samples of lead. I have antique dishes that I'm concerned might have a lead glaze.** A: I’m sorry our test isn’t intended for testing dishes, it most likely will detect the lead but there is a false negative rate higher than is acceptable to us. Is this (+) for lead?** A: I had the same issue with these swabs. In the area where the swab was used the area turned very light pink, kind of, while the swab stayed light orange/light tan. Until I hit a two areas on the outside of the house where the swab turned purple. Then I knew the swabs were working correctly. **Q: Can this be used on steel pet dishes?** A: I would think so, but you might have to scrape away any surface layers of metal to get to what is underneath if that is what you are trying to test. If you think the dish is lead and there is nothing else on the surface it might work directly on the surface layer of metal. **Q: What is the accuracy rate for negative results?
