A silicone gasket along the lid secures it to the canister and creates a decent seal. I liked them so much that I bought a second set, one for my Husky's treats, the other for my general kitchen use. I would have given five stars but one thing was lacking, a nob on the lids to make it easier to open. So if you were thinking "these would be great for my flour, sugar, and brown sugar, think again.
