How do you determine the proper depth of the bit since there is no specifications on the depth of the jig assembly?

Invert your router with bit installed, lay the jig assembly on the base and adjust the height until the bit extends the thickness of your hinge past the jig.

Can this be used to cut hinges into door frames or is it for the doors only?

How does the jig stay attached to the door? Does it screw onto the door?

The kit includes two screws to mount the template to the door or jamb.

Does this template work with a 1/4” shank router setup if I use my own bit?

The router bit that comes with the 1222 HingeMate150 is a 1/4" shank, 1/2" cutting tip straight bit with ball bearing. You can use your own bit, but it has to have a 5/8" bearing to guide the bit around the template and produce accurate results.
