Great background to the history of his work.

Excellent book for the practicing painter

This is a remarkably well-written text with such a detailed analysis of Turner's way of working that you almost feel like you are by his side as he painted. Townsend's command of paint media, pigments, methods of grinding and preparing watercolors and oils is astounding. Unlike so many art books that perhaps describe composition or the meaning of symbols in paintings, this one gets down to the nitty-gritty of how the paint got onto the surfaces and what kinds of surfaces they were. Now, fortunately, history has preserved a lot of information about Turner and many artifacts of his art production, but still, the book organizes all that information in a knowledgeable way. For folks who paint, this is a fantastic text. For those who don't, you might want to after reading this!
