I'm trying to avoid Teflon coated products.** A: I can't tell. I've been looking throughout the box and manual and can't find anything that describes what it is made from, particularly the non-stick surface, but it looks a lot like teflon. the unit itself is made from aluminum. Two substances that we're not crazy about. Because of that, I'll be returning this product. **Q: Is it possible to make only half a cup of dry rice in this or do you need to put at least 1 cup in for it to function properly?** A: You can make 1/2, 3/4, 1 & 1.5 cup of uncooked rice. Any of these measurement the cooker will function properly. Important, Use the measuring cup provided. DO NOT USE OTHER CUP. The critical part is the water & rice ratio rules should be follow diligently to get good result. **Q: What is the steamer insert made of and is it coated with anything?** A: This is the small version. It cooks at most 1 cup of rice. It has no steamer insert unless I threw it out with the box. The full size version which I also own came with a aluminum steamer insert. I did notice that a lot of reviews say that the durability is trash if that comes up, I will edit my review but for now it’s exactly what I needed. It’s just me and my son I’m not allowed to eat as much rice so it’s a perfect size. I do wish that I had got the one just a little bit bigger for when I do want to do bigger things of rice but that’s OK. I just wanted to test it out. I do recommend that if you don’t like your rice so mushy to do a half a cup less than it recommends. The shut off feature is precise that switches it to warm after the rice is done cooking. It’s nice and fluffy once I figured out how much water to put to my rice to my liking I mean with any product you have to be careful with it.
