Cambridge Advanced Learner's Dictionary

An excellent purchase. This item should be owned by every international student wanting to excel in Academic English and prepare for IELTS and university level studies in The UK, Australia or North America. Clear definitions of words, their meaning, synonyms and collocations are organised well and the supporting examples in sentences back up the illustrated explanations. The middle of the publications has been reserved for focus on writing, which gives excellent input and examples on different forms of academic communication, from basic punctuation rules to writing academic essays and tips on things to consider in presentations. The phonetic alphabet runs continuously from the first word entry to the last - look at the bottom of each page and you will spot this useful guide.

Great resource!

I have quite a number of dictionairies. I read and study a lot in English, though it's not my native tongue. I use the app since years and now I discovered, it also exists in paper. So I bought immediately two copies, one for me and one for my daughter. And that it is delivered with a CD for the PC is just the icing of the cake. The key is simple definitions, no "big" words in the sample sentences, so the meaning can be gotten quickly. My favourite and most used dictionary.

For those learning English at an advanced level, this dictionary is a piece of kit that is indispensible. The dictionary explains in clear English the meanings of words - rather than giving definitiions as in dictionaries used by English speaking population. It is intuitive, and remarkable for its use of phonetics (the complete list of English phonetics at the bottom of each page), and for proposing standard English pronunciations and stress sylables. Pleasing to see the correct original pronunciations of ''cervical' and ''communal' for instance. The only reason that I give this a four star instead of five is because this dictionary written in 1995, has not been revised since 2013, the fourth edition, the book this review refers to. As of February 2019, the 2013 edition is the latest (fourth) edition.

It is a splendid edition because it helps me to communicate properly, for instance, I completed an online questionnaire without any doubt of choosing meaningless responses, viz. to give information which was not related to what I meant.

It has just delivered to me. And I didn't really expect the size of it. All I can say is it is one of the best way to improve your English ! Thanks to publishers!

I’ve always been an Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary user, and Cambridge dictionaries never really entered my horizon, until now. I wanted to get a dictionary that came with software that I could use on my computer. So Cambridge Advanced Learner’s Dictionary seemed to fit the bill. My impression: I am pleasantly surprised. Cambridge has done a great job, and managed to surpass Oxford in some areas. While the Oxford dictionary has more words and definitions, those extra entries end up being mostly “fluff”. I feel the Cambridge dictionary hits the right spot in this category. It delivers exactly what you need to know to learn English well: not too much, not too little. A superior word entry layout and larger font size make Cambridge a more attractive dictionary, and the one easier to use than Oxford. The accompanying software installed without a glitch on my Windows 7 64 bit system, and it works great. The software is listed as compatible with Windows XP, 7 and 8. I do believe it will work with Windows 10 just fine. The only downside with this dictionary is its flimsy softcover binding. It will not last. I recommend the hard cover. Verdict: Cambridge Advanced Learner’s Dictionary is a worthy and competent rival to Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary and also to Longman Advanced American Dictionary. I like all 3 of them and highly recommend all three. Their goal is to teach you to speak and write English, and as such, these dictionaries are meant to be read and perused like encyclopedias. On the other hand, if you just need a dictionary as a quick reference, to look up the definition and origin of words, then a Webster or Collins or American Heritage would probably serve you better.

The software in the disc attached at the end of this complete dictionary still works on Windows 11 (even if your machine architecture is Arm64).

Hay muchas cosas que me gustaron de esté diccionario. En términos de calidad del material, para mí este es el mejor diccionario. El papel es mucho mejor que el de Oxford o Longman. Y qué decir del tamaño de la letra, es un poco más grande, lo cual facilita la lectura; por esta mis razon es más voluminoso. Otro aspecto que me agrada mucho es la estructura de su contenido. Las divisiones están bien marcadas, lo que ayuda a identificar cuando se está pasando de un concepto a otro. El indicador de nivel de cada palabra es muy útil ( B2,C1,etc ) más si estás preparandote para una certificación. Ahora, los puntos débiles diría que son la cantidad de palabras que vienen ya que otros diccionarios como los antes mencionados superan la cantidad de palabras. Al realizar algunas consultas, no encontré 7 palabras, mismas que si aparecen en el diccionario de Longman y Oxford. Asimismo, la interface del CD me parece muy sencilla; eso sí rápida y útil, pero basica. A fin de cuentas creo que es un excelente diccionario y que vale la pena adquirirlo. A pesar de que tuve que devolver la primera entrega que recibí porque el producto estaba dañado y la segunda no llegó en el tiempo acordado, la atención de Amazon fue de primer nivel. Por último, el costo es mucho menor que si lo adquieres en alguna librería.
