Teaching Fact Families
Rather than learning math facts through drill and practice flashcards, this is a different method for teaching the fact 'families'. Each child learns differently. This concept of teaching kids to look at the entire fact, rather than just the sum is better for some kids. This it not a 'toy', but kids do have fun with it. My daughter has toted it around back and forth in her backpack. It is durable. The sound can be on or off. (I like that feature.) I also love the different levels it provides. It has provided my daughter with a mental math warm up before she takes her timed math tests in school. I need to stress that this is for school-age children. This is similar to a child learning flashcards. It isn't a 'fun', interactive, points, next level game/toy. Ideas for this item's use: -have a child use this when you can not practice math flash cards with them; -have teachers use it as a learning station during school; -use with older individuals with stroke/dementia; -great mind exercise. ***UPDATE***: I keep seeing this minute math device get poor reviews. I use these so much with kids in school that I thought I could help clarify some things. (1) This is not a toy. It is a way for kids to practice their facts in a different way other than flashcards. In fact, think of these like flash cards. You wouldn't expect kids to be motivated to use them or even think they are fun. This is just a different means of practice. (2) The noise does go off. Hold the ON button down 1/2 way. It will blink quickly indicating the sound is off. It truly is in the instructions. (3) Fact Families or Triangle Math is just another way for kids to learn routine math skills. Some kids learn in a rote manner, where they learn all their multiplication facts and then their division facts. Most the time these kids can carry that over to other areas of math. Some kids need a more global approach. Teaching kids fact families sometimes helps kids see a bigger picture of how all the facts are connected. (4) This is called MINUTE math. It is designed to go quickly just like the timed tests the kids have to take in school. Many classrooms still do the quick 1-2 minute math drill test at the beginning of the day. This is just a way for some kids to warm-up or get used to that way of doing math. (5) Your child may be gifted or advanced. However, please don't complain if your child is younger than the recommended age for this device. Would you also complain about flash cards being to boring? SUMMARY: This is simply another means for a child to learn. I use these as a station all the time because a child can do it independently. I hope this helps answer some of the questions/concerns about the device. I also hope this helps you make an informed decision if this is exactly what you are wanting to purchase for your child.

Fun way to practice math!
I got this for my school aged children (ages 6-12). The different levels allow everyone to play at their own ability. It is fun to challenge one another to see who can get the most in the timed games; it is excellent practice for mastering basic math facts for the younger kiddos (or the older kiddos who might still struggle). I've even found myself challenging my kids to a game here and there! The sounds can get a bit annoying, but they can also be disabled so it would be fun in a waiting room or other public place without being a nuisance. Get one of these! They're so fun!

Pro's & Con's
"MINUTE MATH" ELECTRONIC FLASHCARD... PRO'S: DURABLE, FUN, EDUCATIONAL. IN THAT ORDER! CON'S: THE MINUTE MATH DOES "NOT" ALLOW YOUR CHILDREN TO DO SETS OF ANY PARTICULAR NUMBER! THE PROBLEMS ARE AT RANDOM! THE TIME TO ANSWER A PROBLEM, IS TOO LIMITED, FOR CHILDREN JUST LEARNING THEIR MULTIPLICATION/DIVISION TABLES. (HAVEN'T USED IT FOR ADD/SUBTRACTION, BUT IT'S PROBABLY THE SAME) THIS IS A GOOD ITEM, IF YOUR CHILDREN ALREADY KNOW THEIR TABLES PRETTY WELL, AND JUST WANT TO BRUSH-UP &/OR, GET FASTER. We work with the triangular flash cards and this item seemed to be a great tool for self teaching time
I read multiple reviews before ordering this product as I wanted a device to teach my grandsons their 'fact family numbers'. We work with the triangular flash cards and this item seemed to be a great tool for self teaching time. Not so. For one simple reason: You can turn the timing feature off but all that does is make it possible for you to do as many problems as you would like---not being restricted to just the amount you can complete in 60 seconds. It does NOT keep each problem on the device for a longer period of time so budding math students can think through the fact family and come up with the right missing digit. It only works in FLASH mode----expecting quick responses and not pondering thoughts. Useless unless one is looking for a fast quiz for known facts. Not good for LEARNING those facts. Still debating returning it as it may be of some use in the future but not helpful now with a 1st and 2nd grader still learning the basic adding and subtracting combos. I'm wondering if they intentionally leave the clarity of what 'turning off timing mode' really means off their product description. In my mind when it says you can 'turn off the timing mode', it means you can turn off the necessity for speed in the problem solving, not just the time limit.

Save your time and money
So I bought this for my 5yo to help him with his fluency at math facts. He is doing very well on paper but taking his time and he is at a age practice a lot can build fluency. The product was attracting because of the price, the size ( so he could use it on the go) and the functionalities. Now, while the timer function is great he wasn’t ready for that and I read in the description timer could be taken off so was happy. Despite of trying for 15min the steps described in the instructions I could not take it out. A dedicated button to activate and deactivate timer would have provided a better experience. As for the sound: I manage to deactivate it but it would come back randomly. Also it is the way the machine lets you know if your answer is correct, so deactivate it cancel that option. Conclusion device isn’t great if you plan on using it on close public places (bus, restaurant etc). It feels like a green light and an red light would have been better. Now about the equation themselves: I tried it on before thinking to hand it to my child of course and having the addition and substruction on the same button isn’t ideal. I initially understood you could answer anything that land on the expected result either by add or subtracting the provided factor but no. If I try a number that should be take away to have the answer the device say I am wrong but at the same time it didn’t tell me he was expecting an addition. So maybe for older kids it works but for beginners I am dubious. Here is my honest review: globally the device is cheaply made with few buttons to provide way too many options and it end up not working well or being confusing.

Easy on the go for all ages
My kids 10 and 7 really like this. We just wish it was not so loud. We covered the speaker with tape. It's easy to take with us on the go. And I don't have to keep track of flash cards. The different levels and that fast that it has addition, subtraction, multiplication and division make it's great for all ages.

Untimed Mode is NOT what you think and basically useless
So, this is advertised as you can turn off the timed mode. But it's misleading. Like another reviewer said all it does is mean the child can do as many math problems they want. The normal setting has a 60 second timer on it, so the child does as many problems as they can in 60 seconds. That is the timer that can be turned off! But each individual problem still only gives a very short time to put in an answer before they will put the answer in for you. So, if you have a child that stresses out because of timed math, than this will not help. There is still the stress to answer as quickly as possible before it gives you the answer. The mute does work on this, but again the instructions are not very clear. Push the power button on once, than if you want it to mute push a second time while holding it down for a bit and the sounds will turn off. This is the same with turning off the very inferior timed mode. Push the level you want once, than for the second time hold it down and wait until it stops blinking in the top box.

Great for fun maths on the go
Thank you thank you for getting my youngest to enjoy maths! We have swapped screens for this in the car and he loves it. It’s great you can adjust the difficulty level too…and the size is great for smaller hands, and just slipping in a bag! Great, functional product that makes learning more fun
