Hohner 590BX Big River Harmonica, Key of C Sharp

This A-flat harp is great for playing blues in E flat, (E chords with a guitar tuned a half step down). It is pitched lower than an A and higher than a G. Like all Big River harmonicas it is loud and sounds, IMO, as good as any 10 hole harp in its key. I bought a lot of BR harps years ago, when they were nine dollars each. I am so glad I did. I play the harp mainly from a holder (with my guitars). I've been doing that for over 60 years. The Big Rivers are a little thick for some holders. Often I will put old Marine Band covers on them to make them fit better. The funny thing about the review process for this harmonica is that the software wants to know if it is "sheer" enough to suit me. It is (HA!).

I'm just beginning to learn to play the harmonica; I've purchased several harmonicas in various keys to add to my collection. The Hohner Big River is one of my very favorites as it has such a beautiful tone and is so easy to play. The value for the price is just beyond compare. My collection is dominated by the Big River and I would not hesitate to purchase more.

This harmonica is super loud and the tones are very rich, even though I can't play it very well, it's still fun to dink around with and make noise from time to time!It is a great price for a better quality starter Harmonica.

These are my main Harps besides a few Golden Melodies and a Pro Harp key of F!!!...Great Tone and price!!!!!!...To me these are as good as 1896 Marine Bands and also have interchangeable parts which is a plus!!!...Buy one and you will hear the great tone!!!!!!

The Big River is touted as the "workhorse" of the German made Hohner line. Another way of saying that is that it's the lowest end of their "quality" harps. OK. Fair enough. It's certainly better, much better, than their pitiful Chinese made junk, eg., the Piedmont Blues harp or the Bluesband harp (I speak here from experience on the latter). Having said that, it's a sturdy harp with overly stiff reeds that just doesn't give you the fluidity and flexibility you might want. At least that's my experience, and I now own two Big Rivers. I find myself with real mixed feelings about this harp. It clearly IS a quality harp in some ways, and this is apparent if you've experienced the junk. But it doesn't come close to other quality harps that I own: the Harpmaster, the Delta Frost, the ProHarp.If you're on a strict budget - these things used to cost, not too long ago I gather, about $12 - then give this harp some consideration, and learn to deal with its limitations. If you can afford to spend $5 to $10 more on a harp, look elsewhere for what in my opinion is a much better playing experience.
