The background comes without instructions. there are ripples on the glossy side. i'm assuming it's a layer of protective plastic. am i correct?

Not sure, to be honest. I can't use the glossy side because it's glaring back and I don't have proper lighting to fix that.

I've just had a white backdrop delivered and I'm finding it difficult to unroll. It only wants to stay in a tight roll. Anyone help please?

I have the same problem. You might need some strong clips to secure it to the pole or let someone hold it while you photograph which is not ideal.
