Even if you do not just have a metal grid like I do (certain traps have platforms for the food which also set off the trap door), using a 'plate' means less need to clean the trap. I have used thin slices of apple instead. the rabbits can and do resist. I've used it for 3 weeks and only trapped 2 rabbits, though I know there are more in the vicinity.
