The surface is excellent - and 'seems' hard if it's on a hard smooth surface. Of course, the pad isn't really hard - it comes rolled up like a poster (in a cool tin box no less), but the SURFACE is hard and smooth. The backing is perfect to keep it from sliding around and no - I didn't catch any odd whiffs. If the edges were square, I would have gone 5. I literally wore an area of my desk shiny smooth over the years with several generations of mice, and prior to getting this, even the laser mice could not sense any movement on the polished wood (there was no grain left at all). The pad was so smooth feeling that I didn't think the mouse would see it very well, but I was wrong - my G9x tracks perfectly on it, and it's silky to the touch - not like laying your hand on a chalkboard. As stated, I just wish the edges were squared so it would be flush with the desk edge, but that is the only improvement I can imagine (and it is probably just me that thinks it WOULD be an improvement). It works great, is easy to clean, unobtrusive, stays put, lays flat, and priced right - OK maybe 4.8 stars would have been more fair. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Cheap, seems durable. *by W***N on Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on January 6, 2014* Unfortunately mine came with a lump in the very center, which is a defect I really don't want on a mousepad. That said, I only use one half of the pad anyway.The surface is nice and the pad is hard but not stiff. It's a very thin and floppy mouse pad. Otherwise it's just a standard oversized pad.
