It was a perfect time and place for someone of his natural talent to come into this world, no other city had as rich a musical life as that which moved through the streets of New Orleans, and George Lewis arrived there just as it all came together and blossomed in to jazz. This boxed set contains 127 recorded instances of George Lewis spreading the joy of traditional jazz on both sides of the Atlantic. A lot of this was new to me and cleaned up from private tapes and acetates and recorded at University concerts and in Clubs. The predominant front line is Avery "Kid" Howard on trumpet,Jim Robinson (trombone) and George himself on clarinet. An interesting variation occurs on CD6 where George appears in Denmark with Papa Bue's Viking Jazz Band. The re-recording sounds very good, particularly to one like myself who was introduced to jazz on old recordings of Louis and Bix. The whole thing is very well presented with an accompanying booklet which gives full details of personnel, locations and dates and some useful information but seems to run out of ideas and/or space after the first few discs.
