Will this dish hold 1 lb or 4 sticks of East coast butter? Will the lid still close? Thanks

Not if the butter is still cold. It easily fits 1/2 lb of butter with th2 lib ahur well, but the lid does not close properly for 1 whole lb.

Why doesn’t the lid stay closed?

My kitchen is a little small. Will this butter pan take up too much space?

No, when you don't have enough space, you can use the cover of the butter cover as a backing plate and cut the butter directly on the cover, which will also save space.
