Edith Wharton’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, The Age of Innocence, is both a poignant story of frustrated love and an extraordinarily vivid, delightfully satirical record of a vanished world – the Gilded Age of New York City. Part of the Macmillan Collector’s Library; a series of stunning, clothbound, pocket sized classics with gold foiled edges and ribbon markers. These beautiful hardbacks make perfect gifts for book lovers, or wonderful additions to your own collection. This edition features an introduction by award-winning novelist Rachel Cusk, author of Outline . As the scion of one of New York’s leading families, Newland Archer has been born into a life of sumptuous privilege and strict duty. But the arrival of the Countess Olenska, a free spirit who breathes clouds of European sophistication, makes him question the path on which his upbringing has set him. As his fascination with her grows, he discovers just how hard it is to escape the bonds of the society that has shaped him. The novel was the inspiration for Martin Scorsese's film of the same name, starring Daniel Day-Lewis and Winona Ryder. Review: Beautiful Travel Sized Book. Absolutely gripping Gilded Age story. - I simply forgot how amazing the Age of Innocence is. Reading now as more of an adult than I was when i read it in college, every line felt important. The story of Newland and May and Ellen, against the backdrop of New York society during the days of the 400, completely brings you into another world. I brought it on a once-in-a-lifetime type vacation, and simply couldn't wait to get back to reading it during any moments of downtime. Highly recommended. Very small, perfect for travel and gifting. Review: One of my favorite classics - I wasn’t expecting to enjoy this book as much as I did but I love the Age of Innocence. I fell head over heels for the New York in the 1870s and was so invested in Ellen and Newland’s affair. The depiction of society was well done and this was such a good read even if the first couple chapters are a little slow. I ended watch the film afterwards and besides the cast being amazing, the movie was so well done it made me fall in love with the novel all over again.

Lovely
This edition is smaller than average (about the size of a French paperback, if you're familiar with those) but the quality is exquisite. Will make lovely gifts for my nieces (as well as one to myself!)

Beautiful little book
This is a beautiful little book. Very well-crafted, love the size, jacket is so pretty and the cover underneath is beautiful, very nice paper-quality. I plan to order more of the classics I’ve always wanted to read. Kindles and iPads are great, but when it comes to reading, give me an old-fashioned book any day.

Pulitzer Prize Winner
I enjoyed the story and the author’s style. This was written in 1920. I just saw the movie. The story was changed somewhat.

What is today's relevance of this book ?
Quite entertaining and easy to read. But this is really a book for social historians' of New York's upper crust of the 1870's.And who is ? It is mainly about endless silly snobbery among people who have absolutely nothing else to do. Basic distinction from "common people" : Which family has its own carriage and which doesn't ? Families without their own carriage are simply beyond the pale. Do you have your own box at the opera ? Do you have your own "cottage" at Newport/Rhode Island ? Do you belong to the oldest New York families of Anglo-Dutch ancestry ? Who invites who for dinner ? Endless rounds of mutual visits for silly tittle tattle. And then there is the scandal : A disgraced woman separated from her husband ! Shocking beyond belief ! Who cares ? Bottomline : Much ado about nothing. Mostly irrelevant. But very nicely written.

Forget the film; the real joy is in the reading….
Gorgeous edition of a literary classic - replete with psychological insight and humorous depictions of social hypocrisy; as relevant today as it was at the turn of the 20th century. A masterpiece.
