In reality, there's only about 1.2 to 2 inches of height space inside the safe.barely enough height for anything. This unit fits perfectly in a desk drawer. I've only had this safe a few weeks but so far, it has worked flawlessly. It operates just like the safes that are installed in many hotel rooms. You have to choose your security code every time you lock it. You can also use a credit card "swipe" to lock the unit and the same card will reopen it. I like the way the door pops open automatically when you enter the correct code.So far I've not had to deal with dead batteries, but the instructions are pretty clear on that issue.Shipping was quick and the package arrived in great condition.4/8/2019 I just wanted to post an update on battery life which is amazing. Granted, I don't use the safe every day but I'm still on the original batteries.
