will this work good in a 40 gallon tank?

I bought the large one, it works well in a 40B. However, it depends on your animal. I have/had almost all reptiles and this would not work with some. Bearded dragons like to climb and sit up top towards the basking light, the branches on this are too skinny for beardies. This branch would work very well though with snakes. I recommend buying the large if you want a nice branch to take up about 25-40% of your tank. It took a little more than half of a 20 gallon so it fits well in a 40B.

Measure your tank. If it's over ~13 inches in any direction, the stick should fit.

could this be use safely in an aquarium ?

For terrarium only i believe not aquariums.
