The advantage of having handles that detach--rather than a pair of handles mounted to each band--is that you can use one band at a time or combine the bands to create different levels of resistance--anywhere from 4 Lbs to 62 Lbs.  It also means you can double a band over before attaching it--for exercises that require less than the full 48" length. Also, the fasteners on both the bands and the handles are metal--which means they'll put up with more wear and tear than a set with plastic ends will.  Lastly, the set includes an anchor (for exercises using a fixed object--usually a door), and a little bag to carry it all around in.
