Sometimes they are hard to open at first. They are rather stiff when new. There is a tab on the front that u slightly pull forward while pulling up on the lid. Honestly mine was really hard to open for about the first 5-6 times. To be afraid....if u break it call them them it has a Lifetime guarantee! Hope this helps. **Q: Is it waterproof? Like if it where to be exposed to water a lot and for a long time would it last? I ask because I float the river a lot.** A: Per pelican's website: *Case is able to be submerged under 1 meter of water for up to 30 minutes in accordance with IP67 testing parameters. So if you are floating on top, it shouldn't be a problem. **Q: How many sandwiches and/or apples do you think could fit inside?** A: No apple, maybe one sandwich.
