Has this the infamous double click issue? I know its too soon to know but I wonder if somebody have this proble with the new design...

I had the naga epic previously (wireless version) and yea it had the annoying double clicking issue.This one seems to have a different physical design for the click actuation and feels more stiff/resistant. I feel that it gives a much more clean click than its predecessor. As far as electrical design, no "switch-bouncing" problems yet, but invest only it for a week. I gotta say their updated design is significantly better across the board.

can you use the thumb buttons for general (outside gaming) use, such as word, or maybe using the browser?

Yes through the Razer Synapse Software, you can change them to the back or forward buttons (i personally use my 4 and 5 button as back and forward).You can also make them to open a certain file/program,keyboard keys (like numbers or letters or Fkeys), macro, windows function, ingame function, DPI swap, and multimedia keys. As well as a few other things :)

Were the click buttons also redesigned or just the keypad?

I've never owned the older style, but the overall design has been changed a little. The click buttons are...just normal click buttons. I'm not sure what differences you are looking for or expecting. They are pretty sensitive, but even with my clunky fingers I like them.The biggest changes were in the design of the keypad on the side. The layout was made to be easier to use with your thumb, and the buttons themselves were changed from "squishy" feeling to the nice mechanical "click" type.I've been using this for everything from games to photoshop shortcuts to normal web navigation, and I love it so far. No complaints here.

Does the Synapse 2.0 software HAVE to be used to have macro support? Or can you just simply bind the macro buttons on the mouse to functions in game?

That is kind of a tricky question. The computer recognized the side buttons as 1, 2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,0,-,= on the number bar or as the number pad on the right of the keyboard by default without the software. You can bind commands to those keys in the game, but you must use synapse to make macros or to change the button's function from the default.
