Review: Awesome repair kit!! - Pricy but the best thread repair out there.
Review: One of the few tools that work as they should - I think this is the first review I have ever left on desertcart. However, I am so pleased with the Time-Sert product I had to leave a review. I am a small time Porsche collector and have always collected air cooled cars. Recently, however, the price of the water cooled 911's (996) have reached a point that I thought it was time to add one to the fold. After buying a 1999 911 the first step was to change the oil and drop the sump plate to look for IMSB and timing chain guide debris. You can imagine my disappointment when the head of one of the M6 bolts holding the sump plate broke off! Apparently, this is a common issue. The engine (being in the rear of the car and somewhat low) sometimes bottoms out on bumps, curbs, etc. Even if the sump plate doesn't crack, the bolts will stress fracture and beak on removal. (BTW...the oil in sump plate was very clean. So, there was some good news in all this). Anyway, after dropping the sump plate there was just a little bit of the bolt protruding from the bottom of M96 engine's aluminum block. Trying vice-grips to remove the bolt did nothing. There wasn't enough bolt to grab. Next, I tried JBWelding a nut to the protruding bolt. That was useless. Lastly, I tried drilling out the bolt with a left handed drill bit (hoping that the left handed drilling action would unscrew the bolt). No luck, there. At this point, I had run out of "easy" options. I knew I was going to have to either drill out the bolt with a larger drill bit and retap for a larger bolt or try a Time-Sert and/or Helicoil. After researching my options, I settled on the Time-Sert. Using desertcart Prime the kit arrived in two days. After arrival I watched the videos on YouTube (again) and went through the process in my mind. It was with some trepidation I approached the car knowing that a used engine (not rebuilt) is $7500 to $10K for these cars. My anxiety level was high. However, once I got going it was really quite easy. The whole process took 30 minutes from start to finish with me taking numerous breaks to verify my work and plan the next step. The payoff came at the end when the time-sert was in and I offered the sump plate back up to the car. The bolt went in easily and torqued down to the required 10 N-m with no issue. Success! I found the kit was pretty complete. I did add the following to help me: Oatey 30200 Clear Cutting Oil for the drill and tapping. Time-Sert Tap Guide part # 36105 (VERY useful for making sure the tap was perpendicular to the block). Lisle L170500 Tap socket set for driving the tap and insertion tool. Based on this experience, I know I have a new tool in my arsenal should I break another bolt!

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Will this work with bmw m6x16 bolts?**
A: The M6 time-serts are 11.9mm long. Once installed the bolt can go all the way through if in a lug. In a blind hole the insert gives 11.9mm of thread. The inserting tool locks the insert in place. The damaged M6 thread is drilled out with a 6.25mm drill (in the kit) then there is a counter bore for the insert lip 7.9mm dia x 1.2mm deep (cutter in kit) then tap for the insert which is a 7.15mm diameter. Watch the u-tube videos. I used these on a Yamaha FJR. Hope this helps.

**Q: My blind hole is 15mm in depth, 6M and 1.0 Pitch. Will this kit work?**
A: Yes that is a good depth just drill and tap to the bottom of the hole. After the hole is ready to accept the insert, mark the install driver in the hole by placing in the hole without the insert then mark the tool so you know where the bottom of the hole is and you will not to bottom out the tool.
Time-Sert always wants approx 6mm deeper hole than the inserts length.

**Q: what size is the drill bit in this kit?**
A: It is a Letter D .246.

**Q: Dealer says I need a new oil pan because my threads are damaged, will this fix it instead of replacing a whole entire oil pan???btw I have a 2018 civi**
A: The bolt usually go though the oil pan into the crack case. If the threads are stripped in the crank case you may be able to use the thread insert to repair the stripped thread. A new oil pan suggests a bigger issue but I am not familiar with the construction of the civic.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Saved my engine block
*by C***G on November 23, 2023*

The quality is top notch. I had stripped threads inside my engine block, and wasn't able to tap larger threads. This time sert kit saved my engine block, and I've very confident in the repair. I also used it on plastic threads for my radiator, and for the upper radiator mounts. So far, I've used 5 inserts and I feel like I've gotten my money's worth. I highly recommend it to anyone
