HSK Standard Course 3 SET - Textbook +Workbook (Chinese and English Edition)

It was for a class. Great class, my son is already speaking fairly well after the first two classess. Goid series.

Good books

This might be the best book in the HSK series, because it has a good audio exercise for each chapter. In each chapter, the format is the same: 4 readings (all on the recordings) and 1 extra recording which is a list of key phrases. These build naturally, so an equivalent would be (using English): 1. "hardly": I hardly know her/I hardly know what to do/I hardly know anything about mathematics (In other words, they go through some key vocab one word/phrase at a time, and give a short series of illustrative examples in each case) There are 20 chapters, each with the readings, and then some key grammar points. The grammar is insufficient, which I think comes from attempting to teach Chinese as much as possible using Chinese only. This means many key language points simply get ignored. Furthermore, as with the entire HSK course, there is not nearly enough explanation of the vocab. Some words can be used as nouns, some as nouns and verbs, and so on; and it simply doesn't explain all of these. Each word is given only one definition. The recordings no longer come on a CD; you have to download, one file at a time, and it is frightfully tedious. This is a common problem in the tech world, and wherever anyone tries to get digital, they start off well, and then start messing things up. If they provided one big download, that would be okay, but not 100 separate files, that you have to download one at a time. That is really just an appalling mistake

I received the two books as promised, but the instructions to get the audio was to buy (separately) an MPR pen. I couldn't find out how to buy one of those. I really didn't like that I wasn't told this before I bought the books. I will return them. The good part, I liked the books and my HSK 2 - 3 level would have worked well with these books. They have just enough English to help you through the books. Really sad situation about not disclosing the info about having to purchase some pen to get the audio.

Shipping is very slow, but safe. Got both the book and workbook in perfect condition. Workbook is black and white print, but Textbook is full color. The print quality is good, there are no issues when reading roman or chinese characters. Paper is a bit thin, so in some pages you can see a bit of the print on the following page, nothing too bad though, doesn't affect the purpose of the books. Excellent purchase.

Books, are fine, but wish there was an answer key. It's hard to know if I'm doing the right thing when i put down my answers.
